I don't like shea butter really. It did nothing for my hair and it felt too heavy on my skin. Coconut oil has done wonders for my hair. I used to use it on my skin. I can only do so during our dry, cold seasons. I made a mistake of putting on coconut oil and going boating at the lake on a hot day. I came home resembling burnt dodo with skin peeling like an onion lol. Not recommended in the sun, I'll tell you that.

My experience:Wen i read abt sheabutter on this forum,i made a big fuss abt it,tried so much 2 lay hands on it.Sharperly,i startd using it on my hair n later on my skin.Didnt notice any tremendous effect on my skin, infact i got darker coupled wit that awful smel, jus dat it helps wounds in healin fast n does justice 2 an extent 2 d scar..but i got 2 say it jus might be gud 4 hair, tho i was mixin it wit a haircream, later with coconut oil,my brittle dry hair has gradualy healed.

I think both of them are overrated. I do have two containers of shea butter: one from Senegal (given to me by someone) and one I bought over here. I actual prefer the Senegalese one, but I haven't used either consistently to gauge what exactly they're doing. For my skin, I love cocoa butter oil and vitamin e oil (used in small amounts because it's really thick). For my hair, olive oil (my favourite, hands down). I like cooking with coconut oil sometimes though, but a little bit goes a long way. If you use too much, it'll overpower the other flavours.

I don't know how pure or how the Shea butter the people complaining about the smell bought. But the Shea butter I buy and use smells like nuts (not a very bad smell) I buy directly from local women who use it to cook. if you use oils alone, you may not see the difference because it's not enough, you still need water based moisturizer, to make your skin supple, clear and soft.

Shea butter makes most people dark, but it's good for the feet and palms, not suitable for oily skin, and it's good for hair, especially natural hair.

Coconut oil is good for both hair and skin. I love it's smell.

Personally I use different oils (olive oil, black seed oil etc.) and essential oils (carrot, orange, radish e.t.c) but using any oil should be based on your skin type.

@macklef how do you use it, and for how long?

Shea butter is very good for my hair. I've been using it for eleven months now. It helps heals scalp burn after applying relaxer to your hair. It acts as both a moisturizer and sealant. I've not really tried it on my skin so I can't say anything about applying to the skin. Just started using coconut oil, not up to a week, so I can't compare.
