Obasanjo Seals PDP Secretariat by anonimi: 6:10am On Sep 08, 2013
The year was 2006 i.e. seven years ago.
PDP was split into two factions and Atiku (yes he again) leading the New PDP with 17 governors and one of the founding fathers of PDP by his side.

Police seal off factional PDP secretariat
Monday, June 12, 2006

Security operatives yesterday in Abuja, swooped on the National Secretariat of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sealing it off.

The operation, which began at about 7 A.M, was carried out by a detachment of anti-riot policemen numbering 20 and led by the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawrence Alobi.

In a dramatic twist Friday, the PDP faction believed to be loyal to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, opened the secretariat and announced the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Dr. Amadu Ali.
Confirming the raid on the secretariat, Alobi told Sunday Sun that "the policemen will continue to be there until we are sure there will be no crisis."

On what prompted the action, the FCT Police Commissioner said the police acted to prevent a breakdown of law and order, adding, "when there is a crack, there is bound to be crisis. We anticipated crisis and it is better to prevent it than manage it."
The factional PDP, which identified itself as "leaders and co-founders of the PDP" has such members as Senator Ibrahim Safana, Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun and Ifeatu Obi-Okoye.
The group asked members of the NWC to vacate their offices immediately and hand over to the directors in their various departments.

It said it took the action in order to give a sense of direction to the party and ensure that it does not continue "to nose-dive into oblivion".
Led at the world press conference by Oyedokun, the group named the founding National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Solomon Lar, as the head of a 26-member Interim National Management Committee (IMC) to direct the affairs of the party pending the conduct of an elective national convention later in the year.

Others named in the committee are Safana (deputy national chairman, north); Oyedokun (deputy national chairman, south) and Chief Orji Nwafor-Orizu (national secretary), among others.
It purportedly nullified the expulsion of ex-Governor Chris Ngige and the indefinite suspension of Governor Joshua Dariye from the PDP, adding that all activities of the party carried out by the Ali executive, including the membership revalidation exercise and congresses at the ward, council, state and zonal levels stand voided.

No fewer than 17 serving governors of the PDP as well as Chief Solomon Lar, one of the founding fathers of the PDP attended the "emergency" meeting.
But in a swift reaction, the embattled PDP leadership has dismissed the development as illegal
and that the party will go through a legal process to pursue the matter.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, John Odey told a news conference that there are no factions in the PDP.
"What is really happening at this stage is that an alliance of a few politicians who are stranded by virtue of a deserving loss of influence and reputation, together with politicians of some opposition parties rather than prepare for the forthcoming elections are indulging in a delusion that can scatter the ruling party," Odey said.
The National Secretary, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, in his comments said the party's resolve for reconciliation should not be viewed as a sign of weakness.
"Our olive branch should not be taken to be a white flag of surrender. No one should be under any illusion that we are scared," Maduekwe declared solemnly.

Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the party has reacted to the development by disowning Oyedokun.

The party, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Mr Yinka Adeojo, said Oyedokun's name is not in the party's register, having voluntarily withdrawn to join the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) with his co-travellers.
The party said it was laughable that Oyedokun who addressed a press conference a few days ago in Osogbo City Hall as the ACD leader in the state could suddenly emerge in Abuja to say he and his friends were taking over the PDP.

"As a Yoruba man, we expect Alhaji Oyedokun to know that the people have a name for anyone who attempts to sneak back into a house where he had earlier said goodnight. Nigerians should ignore this man and his friends," the statement said.
In Asaba, Delta State, a prominent politician and retired civil servant, Chief John Enemoh said the present fate of the party was long overdue, describing the PDP family as bereft of principles and ideology.

Enemoh said that the PDP, contrary to its earlier" manifesto had been emasculated and rendered impotent as well as turned into a military organisation where members were only to express or show loyalty.

Also, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the state said it was not surprised at what is happening in the PDP, describing it as a good omen for other parties to strategise ahead of 2007 elections .

The Vice Chairman of AD in the state , Chief Tony Ezeagwu noted that the PDP has long been deceiving Nigerians that all was well when in actual fact, it was locked in deep crises of confidence and zero performance.

Atiku hand was in it in 2007, same as today.

when will Atiku realise that he is expired. the difference this time is that Atiku and Obj seems to be working together.
Anyway, same story, same method and definitely same outcome

If the outcome of the 2006 saga is wat yall r expecting then u will be disappointed to find out that GEJ will end up as the ultimate loser.this is because the reason for atiku forming another PDP faction then was because of OBJs third term agenda.of which the shutting down of the PDP SECRETARIAT by OBJ did not achieve a thing the same way GEJs approach will also fail.

Yes, we all remember.

Musa Ajebor is right, OBJ closing the Secretariat did nothing to stop Atiku's camp from WINNING. OBJ did not contest for a third term, Atiku and his boys were victorious. The best OBJ could do was prevent Atiku from replacing him.

You cannot re-write our recent history for whatever your agenda is!!!
Atiku FAILED WOEFULLY then as he could not HIJACK the political machinery of PDP for his presidential ambition.
He ran to the JagaBANDIT who provided him a platform in the Action Congress (AC)
to run for president, which he lost woefully to Yaradull.
Was he not even third behind Yaradull & Ayatolla Buhari
Yet you want to sell us the idea that he won. Na so dem dey win?

You seem to have an agenda.

OBJ was in his second term already, if Atiku wanted to contest in 2007, all he had to do was run in the party primary. He would have NO reason to form his own faction. There would be NO reason for 17 Governors to want to form their own faction.

Atiku and his boys formed their faction to prevent OBJ from clinching a third term, and to ensure that power rotated back to the North. As I said, they won, and the only thing OBJ could do was prevent Atiku from beating Yar'Adua.

You are PARTIALLY correct to the extent that OBJoke was trying to see if he could run for a third term to further block Atiku's access to the presidency starting with their battle during OBJoke's run for second term in 2003.

The pertinent questions to ask are:

- Did OBJoke EFFECTIVELY block Atiku's presidential ambition
- Did Atiku remain in PDP for the 2007 elections?
- Depending on how YOU answer the questions above, YOU can re-evaluate YOUR conclusion that OBJoke then "was the ultimate loser" who "did not achieve a thing"!
shocked shocked shocked

Now let's do a refresh of pre-2003 when OBJoke was also being THREATENED, HARRASSED & MOLESTED by the same gangs not to contest for his constitutional 2nd term:

Nigeria: There Was Single Term Consensus For Obasanjo, Says Gemade
26 NOVEMBER 2002

Lagos — Chief Barnabas Gemade, immediate past national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared intention to vie for the Presidency. in this interview with Daniel Ior in Makurdi, Gemade speaks on the controversial single term of five years as well as the agreement purportedly signed by President Obasanjo with northern leaders. Excerpts

There are claims that President Olusegun Obasanjo reached an agreement with the north for a single tenure in office. As a key member of the party, would you say Obasanjo actually signed such agreement?

OBJ was not harassed by Northeners. OBJ won more Northern votes than Buhari in 2003.

In fact, OBJ ran against Ojukwu in 2003 and Ojukwu declared the results fraudulent. Igbos were furious with OBJ.

I should also point out that OBJ has never been well loved in the SW. Our region didn't even vote for him in 1999.

Pre-2003 Flashback II
=======================

Obasanjo rejects call to drop second-term bid

Abuja- Nigeria (PANA) -- President Olusegun Obasanjo Monday rejected a call by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on him to drop his bid for re-election for a second four-year term in 2003.
The Association had led a delegation Monday to the Presidential where it told Obasanjo that his bid for re-election was not in the best interest of the nation.
The National Chairman of the NBA, Wole Olanipekun, said "we have weighed the pros and cons of Your Excellency and every State governor seeking a second term and our honest conclusion is that it will not be in the best interest of the nation" "Right now, the atmosphere is charged every where, the signs are frightening and horrifying.
Several Nigerians are being abducted, killed, slaughtered, maimed and harassed for reasons not unconnected with the second term syndrome," he said.
Olanipekun, who led other NBA National Executive Committee members on the visit, lamented that the second term ambitions of the President and most of the State governors were being pursued at all costs.
"Should it be at the expense of the deaths of thousands of Nigerians or at the expense of the relative peace which we still enjoy now?" he asked.
The NBA chairman told Obasanjo that the Bar's position was informed only by the need for unity and cohesion of the nation.
Echoing the proposal for a single five-year term for all elected executives in the country, earlier canvassed by an elders' Committee, "The Patriots," Olanipekun dismissed the suggestions that the 1999 constitution cannot be amended at this point to accommodate the proposal.
He said: "no political executive office holder in this country, has been given a mandate for eight years in office or for two consecutive four years in office.
" The NBA said "as a Christian, Mr President is aware of the fact that even God who is Omnipotent, Omniscient, yielded to the calls and agitation of the Israelites to be governed and ruled the way they wanted.
" But in his reply, Obasanjo flatly rejected the NBA's call.
"If the constitution says I can be here for four years and have a second term, then that is the rule of the game.
It is not fair to change rules midway into a game," he argued.
The retired Army General added: "my job now is to uphold the constitution and our laws.

" According to him: "this country belongs to us all and we must do what is right for it.
If God who made it possible for me to be here decides that I should not be here again, I will not be here a minute longer.
" He said Nigerians should find workable solutions to problems associated with political transition instead of trying to run away from them.
"If a single term became law, Nigeria would still have to deal with the problem of transition," he added.

The funniest thing!

More Igbos voted for Yar'adua than for Ojukwu. This is interesting considering the current situtation.

Ojukwu secured 155,947 votes. Even Orji Kalu secured more votes than that. In fact, Ojukwo NEVER won a state at the Presidential level in the SE. In 2003, or 1999, he might have been a victim of rigging, but I believe he just LOST in 2007.

That was always OBJ's plan. He never intended to run for a 3rd term. He only flew the kite so that those who might have rooted for Atiku became afraid of doing so openly, and instead sat on the fence, in case the 3rd term thing became reality. No one wanted to go to jail. In the end, when it was obvious that it had become too late for Atiku, Baba picked Yar'Adua and campaigned vigorously for him. Baba was right. Atiku was too desperate then, and he still is now. He should never be allowed anywhere near power.
