All this is rubbish. Can someone tell me how the life of the common man is being bettered? Only the top 1% and those in government are reaping the benefits of this so-called "expanding" economy.

Since PDP came into power in 1999, the gap between the rich and the poor is bigger than ever and the Nigerian middle class is very weak in terms of purchasing power.

The size of the Nigerian economy may actually currently be bigger than that of South Africa and this could be established as early as next year when our GDP would be rebased by then and the true size of our economy would be determined. This is because going by the current criteria used to measure our GDP a lot of things are not being captured thus the current figures for our GDP do not reflect the real size of our economy.

That said, even if our GDP is established to be bigger than South Africa's they still remain a far more developed country than us in real terms. Also the size of the GDP of a country[or even per capita income] is an outdated way of determining the level of development of a country. What is currently used is what we call Human Development Index[HDI] which attempts to measure the overall quality of life of the people using various criteria. Using HDI South Africa still stands heads and shoulders ahead of Nigeria.

chinziaski: We Nigerians are the cause of our problems. We are in Nigeria and we are seeing the day-to-day activities of our country.

We sit in our house while we allow some bunch of miscreants determine who will and who will not rule us. Have we forgotten this is not a monarchy rule, or have we forgotten the definition of democracy?

Why can't we the citizens of Nigeria bring one man from amongst us, put him in a political party and vote for him. A man that knows the struggle. We shouldn't wait for atiku, amaechi and gej to finish fighting and we vote for the winner. We shouldn't wait for APC to promise us and do nothing at the end. We need someone who knows the struggle to take the place of government. We don't need to kills this politicians. We should gather our people to fill the various tiers of govt. The people representing the citizens of Nigeria and not representing a political party!

We should know all these things are failure:
Electricity is a failure
Education is a failure
Transport is a failure
Agriculture is a failure
Infrastructure is a failure
Diversification of our economy have not been forthcoming.

Our government are so stereotype, they keep on telling us thesame rubbish every single year.

How can a country produce oil and refine outside and you say ur economy will be better than south africa's economy?

This man must be high on alabukun!

Yes,it is inevitable that we will overtake SA in GDP sooner rather than later..
But given the fact that we have more than twice the southafrican population, our GDP will have to grow close to twice the Southafrican GDP to actually match the development of southafrica.
So yes,we will overtake SA very soon, but i don't think it will mean that we will overtake SA's level of development anytime soon.

When some people talk, you will know they know little or nothing. America, China, Europe and UK, Japan etc all have homeless, jobless, destitutes, poor in the streets.

The good thing when economy grows is that opportunities abound, the middle class is strengthened and more leave the lower class to the middle and the middle to the upper class.
The poor and common you will always have with you.

Yea. You are right. But you guys forget smtin else: even if it wud take a much longa time to catch up with SA in terms of certain Development Index, our much faster growth means much more OPPORTUNITIES. And Opportunities means many newer POSSIBILITIES. Opportunities and Possibities cannot be easily quantifiable. Thats what Investors, Local and Foreign, see. Thats what is causing this much Excitement..

At the end of the day, the economy is about people. The HDI measures the quality of lives of people in a given country and not how big or developed the country is. Fact is the scandinavian people have the highest quality of life in the world ahead of countries with much larger economies.

The major thing we need to do, is fix the power sector. Once we fix power, nigeria will witness economic development not just economic growth, then we can aspire for G20, G15, G10 even if na G2, we go enter.

Nigeria Closes Gap On South Africa’s
Investment Lead.

Anyways SA is still seeing more real development happening than Nigeria. roads and rail expansion, port, manufacturing, ict, doubling power production in 15 years and soon to be oil and gas producer.

zetdee: WHILE South Africa remains the most attractive corporate investment destination in Africa, Nigeria is nipping at its heels and may overtake it as soon as next year, according to a new survey.

Nigeria has moved into second place, from third last year, overtaking Egypt which is now in third position despite its continuing political upheavals. This is according to the Rand Merchant Bank’s (RMB’s) annual " Where to Invest in Africa: A guide to corporate investment" report.

The report places South Africa 33rd in the overall world rankings — its worst position ever. Nigeria, on the other hand, has improved 35 places in the past decade to rank 38th in the world index.

The researcher and co-author of the guide. Celeste Fauconnier, said the gap between the two African giants was narrowing because Nigeria was "doing well" while S A was "stagnating".

South Africa is placed second last in comparison with its fellow Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) economies. China is ranked first, India eighth and Brazil 27th with Russia in last place at 34th.

Nigeria could replace South Africa in top place in the next two to four years, or even sooner, if the revisions to gross domestic product (GDP) under way see the size of the former’s economy adjusted upwards as much as 40%.

This would put the West African country close to South Africa’s GDP of $384bn. Nigeria’s GDP is now $268.7bn, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Nigeria’s growth rate forecast at 6%-7% a year for the next five years, compared with South Africa’s forecast of 2%-3%.

Therefore, the West African powerhouse could overtake South Africa as the continent’s largest economy by as early as next year.

Nigeria’s population of 162.5-million is more than triple that of South Africa’s 50.6-million, adding to its attraction.

The RMB survey finds the top 10 African countries remain the same as last year, though Nigeria and Egypt switched places.
Ranked from fourth place to 10th are Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya.

The scores were finalised before the recent political disarray in Egypt and Libya, but Ms Fauconnier said RMB included them on the list as the research is meant to inform long-term investment decisions.

Egypt’s sizeable market and population, and decent operating environment with a highly diversified economy should make it an attractive destination once tensions subside. "Once political tension is resolved, we often see portfolio flows back into the country and these economies recover quite quickly from a growth rate perspective," Ms Fauconnier said.

Last week, South Africa fell one place from 52nd to 53rd out of 148 on the WEF global competitiveness list, as Mauritius overtook it to sub-Saharan Africa’s top spot. Nigeria is ranked 120th. Labour discord, dragged down the South African ranking.

The WEF uses a different methodology than the RMB, assessing competitiveness based on the opinions of about 13,000 business leaders in 148 countries. It focuses on 12 pillars including institutions, infrastructure, macroeconomic environment, education and labour market efficiency.

RMB assigns investment attractiveness scores based on GDP, growth forecasts over the next five years and the operating environment.
The operating environment is assessed using the WEF global competitiveness index, the World Bank’s Doing Business report, the Heritage Foundation’s index of economic freedom and Transparency International’s corruption perceptions index.

Ms Fauconnier said South Africa’s growth was weak, but it remained top of the rankings because it had the largest market in Africa and a sophisticated operating environment.
