Should Prostitution Be Legalised? by Psalmpy(m): 8:43am On Sep 15, 2013
PROSTITUTION has always been with us — it’s a profession that dates back to the beginning of time — it is here to stay. In Nigeria, people are used to street prostitution — prostitutes who roam the streets looking for clients — this is so common and no longer sets tongues wagging.
However, an agency that runs a website that advertises prostitutes and promotes the peddling of flesh has sparked debate on the pros and cons of prostitution. It has led to contestations of whether prostitution should remain criminalised or legalised.
Proponents of legalising prostitution believe it would reduce crime, improve public health, increase tax revenue, help people out of poverty, get prostitutes off the streets, and allow consenting adults to make their own choices. They contend that prostitution is a victimless crime.
They generally believe that, since prostitution is a harmless act, it should not, by definition, be considered a crime. Many believe that criminalising prostitution only exacerbates the spread of diseases, and if the practice were legal, it would encourage cleaner working conditions and better STD testing for prostitutes.

Those who support legalisation also believe that there is nothing immoral about sex, and since it is freely dispensed, there is no harm in charging for it. Many also believe that criminalising the industry only brings discrimination and poor working conditions for sex providers and purchasers. Many also think that if women could legally participate on their own free will, the likelihood of underage prostitution and sex slaves would decrease.
They go on to say that prostitution cannot be stamped out — we might as well accept that it will always be around. That is why it’s called the oldest profession in the world. It’s here to stay, we might as well bring it into the open.

Opponents of legalising prostitution are of the standing that it is the most exploitative and degrading work on earth. In their eyes it undermines the fight for equal rights between men and women as it is founded on a patriarchal hierarchy that classifies women as extensions of men.
They believe that legalising prostitution would lead to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases such as Aids, global human trafficking, and violent crime including rape and homicide. They contend that prostitution is inherently immoral, commercially exploitative, empowers the criminal underworld, and promotes the repression of women by men.

They argue that it is a moral decadence that will turn Zimbabwe into a lost country. It will be a giant leap towards legalising other vices such as homosexuality. Zimbabwe is a nation with core values that make it only one of its kind in the League of Nations - if we decriminalise prostitution we will be just another country they say.

Many also believe that since most sex workers are female, the practice is demeaning to women and enhances the chances of violence against women. Others state that prostitution increases the involvement of sexual predators and the use of minors as sex slaves.
All this talk is done in bars, at funerals, weddings, in church, in factories, in offices — in a nutshell in all spheres of life. Let’s Talk managed to drag some of the proponents and opponents of prostitution to its round table and this is what they had to say:
Miss Delta Ndou: Gender activist and feminist
Miss Ndou believes that prostitution should be decriminalised because the laws that illegalise prostitution are discriminatory to women and leave the male folk unscathed. She believes that if the Government does not want to legalise prostitution then the laws should also target the man who seek prostitutes as they are equally guilty of violating the law as the women.

Why shouldn't prostitution be legalise.we should put aside religion and immoral centiment and tell ourself the truth.the so called prostitute today are more matured, inteligent, smart and neat than the average girls u see on the street. That is the only ways we can keep our selt safe from sexually transmited diseasses only one percent will agreed a sex with u without using protection no matter how hard u try u will only end up humiliated unlike the average on the street. Barnning prostitution will only increase the number of rape by over 100 percent social media has made it easier to access porn and porn related movies while in the mode u can simply walk into any hotel satisfy yourself then walk. Barnning prostitution will only make the situation worst more worst than the gorvernment or the religion body can control

police do arrest them. Which I think is very bad. They're trying to make ends meet. And its not like they rape their customers. What's bad in two consenting adults doing their thing? Aren't they better than †he policemen who exploit †he masses on highways? angry
