The Federal Government has approved about £146,000 (N36m) for the payment of pensions of five former heads of service that served in the country during the colonial era. They are all alive and living in the United Kingdom. Although government did not give their names, it said the youngest of them is 81 years old while the oldest is 106. The money is allocated for payment over the next 25 years within which they are expected to still be alive. The allocation for the pension payments for the colonial officers employed by the British Government come at a time the Federal Government is yet to clear backlogs of pensions of its retired workers running into billions of naira. Some Federal Government retirees were paid their pensions last in May and their representatives have had to embark on several fruitless trips to Abuja to lobby for the payments. Before now, many Nigerians had thought that such burden was being borne by the government of the United Kingdom, but the revelations by Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, underlined the present circumstances. Aji spoke yesterday at a town hall meeting with members of staff under the auspices of the Joint Union Negotiating Council at the Public Service Institute, PSIN, in Abuja. The National Union of Pensioners (NUP) reacted angrily to the disclosures saying it was wrong for government to be paying ex-colonial officers when it was yet to clear the backlog of check-off dues owed the NUP of which only six months arrears was paid, while the pensioners are still owed about eight months by the government. The General Secretary of NUP, Elder Actor Zal, said yesterday that about eight months arrears are still pending, while countless pensioners have died or too old to pursue the entitlements. The NUP general secretary while responding further to questions on the announcement that colonial officers who served the nation decades ago are to benefit from the Federal Government largesse, said though he was not aware of the development yet, that it would be wrong and out of place for the government to insist on making payments to colonial officers, when members of the NUP that have been long cleared and approved for payment were yet to be paid. – National Mirror. http://thecitizenng.com/governance/jonathan-approves-pensions-for-colonial-officers/ |

This people wicked o. The money is allocated for payment overWould they still be alive till then especially that of 106 years. I thought since you've taken such a nice initiative, you will pay them at once. This is tantamount to giving with right hand and collecting back with left hand. 3 Likes |

Someone should please prove this news item to be untrue because it makes no sense at all. Pray, why should Nigeria that's still struggling to provide basic infrastructure add the pension bill of some very old folks to its already humongous recurrent expenditure? Why should Nigeria that is yet to properly cater for its pensioners strut offshore to pay pension to uninvited colonialists? Why should Nigeria with a scary rate of youth employment be paying pensions to British citizens of 81 to 106 years old? Why should Nigeria that has no well-articulated social benefit system in place for its citizens pay pension to citizens of Britain which has a robust social welfare package in place? Why should Nigeria reward colonialists that were uninvited and worked in the interest of Britain? Why should Nigeria add to the loot and plunder the colonialists went away with? Why should we be reminded of colonialism in such a rude manner? At this rate, even kidnappers, militants, Boko Haram terrorists, oil theft thieves, etc will soon be on pension. 24 Likes |

chinco19: Misplaced priorities is the major problem of the FG Exactly. This is one of the many problems. Nigerians deserve a much better standard of living than this but the wicked leaders spend on useless ventures and their own pockets. It's easier for them to spend on waste than to think. So the people suffer and many people try to leave the country. I shudder when I see what Nigerians pass through at home or abroad just to make a living. Can any British citizen or London resident who sees Nigerians doing menial/degrading jobs in London believe that Nigeria pays the pensions of old British colonialists? 2 Likes |

What are they doing about the pension thieves all those pensioners should take their destiny in their hand and go to the home states of those pension thieves and demand for their head,I still don't get it why should the FG pay colonial officers who worked for the british government, they ought to get their pension from their government because they made a lot of profit for their govt by exploiting us,I smell politics in this idea of paying past colonial officer ,this means we are still colonized. 1 Like |

This has nothing to do with GEJ as it is a long held practice. Most countries colonized by Britain make payment to their retired colonial officers. The retired colonial officers were known as constitutional casualties. It was argued that Her Majesty's government was not the employer of these civil servants. The genesis of these payments was a 1934 order made by Her Majesty's government, which established Her Majesty's Overseas civil service after she received Colonial Report No 306. Part of that Order said that "should a territory in whose public service officers were employed become independent, these officers would be entitled to expect in the event of premature retirement officers, resulting from constitutional changes they would receive compensation from the Government of the territory concerned." 1 Like |

I wish Nigerians could show more interest in how they are governed. The outcry that greeted a mere 'oga at the top' gaffe was spontaneous and reverberating. Are issues like this not more important? If Nigerians don't show interest, there won't be a strong incentive for the misruling leaders to do well and the vicious cycle will continue. The people will continue to suffer and live in under-development. Heaven helps those who help themselves. 1 Like |

chinco19: Misplaced priorities is the major problem of the FG I strongly agree with you. I thought pensions are supposed to be paid to only those who were in the employ of a particular establishment. Colonial Officers were sent by the colonial masters. They should get their pension from them. GEJ should think of all the children who are at home now because of ASUU strike. This money if added to the offered 30b would have made a difference. |
