A suspect has been shot and killed and another arrested following
a shootout between robbers and the driver of a diplomat (Nigerian) in
Fourways, Sandton. It's alleged that a gang of men in a blue BMW had followed the diplomat from Johannesburg's OR Tambo
international airport.

The police's Katlego Mogale says the robbers
struck as the diplomat's car pulled up at a gate in Magaliessig.
“Two armed suspects jumped out and they pointed at the driver in the diplomatic vehicle with a firearm. A shootout ensued where one suspect was fatally wounded and the driver was injured and he was taken to hospital for medical attention.

One suspect was arrested on the scene when police arrived. The other two suspects fled the scene with luggage, a laptop and the driver’s cell phone.

A manhunt has been launched to locate the 2 suspects. The arrested suspect will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's court on charges of attempted murder and robbery,” said Mogale.

An unlicenced firearm was recovered. This is the latest in a string of incidents where people arriving at OR Tambo have claimed to have fallen prey to gangs following them to their destinations.

This is not an isolated incident - many Nigerians arriving at Oliver Tambo airport have been followed and robbed. The criminal gangs are based at the airport and the police are very much part of them. When a plane arrives from Lagos they set into action. Pray you are not targeted because you cannot escape them. Three years ago a Nigerian was followed from the airport and they caught up with him at the reception of the hotel he was to lodge, robbed and killed right there. A friend who was returning to Nigeria was robbed by a policeman man in the toilet at the same Jo'bourg airport. I was curious to know why he didn't shout for help ("thief, thief", naija style)and he said he feared the armed policeman would hav shot him - and that was his first trip abroad. He lost $200 to the policeman/robber. My advice to Nigerians going to South Africa is to be vigilant- in fact, plan ahead how to avoid being robbed and don't trust the useless policemen at Oliver Tambo airport, the gateway into the country, because they are in the robbery syndicate.
