UK embassy denies Lagos lawmakers visa

By Mudiaga Affe

The United Kingdom Consular Office in Lagos on Wednesday denied about 14 lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly visas for their trip to the UK.

The lawmakers had been slated to travel to the UK to attend a one-week workshop aimed at sharpening their legislative skills and oversight responsibilities.

The reason for the denial was, however, not known.

But a competent source at the LAHA said the affected legislators were the third batch of lawmakers to fly out to the UK for the training.

The first and second batches were led by the Speaker, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, and his deputy, Mrs. Adefunmilayo Tejuoso, while the third batch was expected to be accompanied by some civil servants in the House.

The source added that the decision to refuse the legislators visas was not taken lightly by the affected lawmakers who rallied the Speaker to lead a delegation from the Assembly to pay a courtesy visit to the Consulate to ascertain the reasons why the officials were denied visa.

The Speaker, who later briefed some of the affected lawmakers, said that the Consular Office had given assurances that the documents submitted by the lawmakers would be reviewed and the visa would be issued to enable them to catch up with the deadline for the arrival for the workshop.

I'm happy! Travel too much. Each time they share "Ghana must fo" they run to UK and US to bank it or buy houses. They don't even trust our banks anymore. May God give Nigerians good leaders. This one would be worse than OBJ's regime. Watch and see.

But it's a very big slap on our face. The lawmakers are going to UK to improve their economy anyway.

We should look at larger picture. Nigeria is one hell of sick country.

Most of these guys never travelled in their life, this is good opportunity. I dont blame them.

Plus, the govt contractors travel, the govt ministers travel, the head of govt agencies + parastatals all travel and send their kids abroad.

Soon, LG councillor will want to travel and give some funny reasons.

grin cheesy grin

They should deny all lawmakers from Nigeria and indeed all political office holders, their wives, children and sibblings visa as its another form of national resource looting. Always going on one useless course or workshop and yet nothing good comes out of it.
Re: Uk Embassy Rejects 14 Lagos Lawmakers Visa by abdurrazaq(m): 11:11am On Jun 27, 2008
It shall be permanent! May they never be granted the visas on their second trial. FOOLISH Rogues.
@RedHOTChic, it is a slap on the face of the affected (the legislators) not on the face of any other Lagosians/Nigerians. In fact it is a blessing (though temporary cos, they won't stop until they go on that trip even if it is Afghanistan)

Re: Uk Embassy Rejects 14 Lagos Lawmakers Visa by seyibrown(f): 8:43pm On Jun 27, 2008
They don't need to travel out of the country to  sharpen anything!

They only go to spend and bank our money!

They will get the visas anyway. The refusal must have been as a result of not meeting all conditions necessary to be granted the Visas.

They do not need to travel out the country to know how to solve Nigeria's problems. They can start by ceasing to embezzle our money!
Re: Uk Embassy Rejects 14 Lagos Lawmakers Visa by asamuel: 10:37pm On Jun 27, 2008

@folahan britain is already finding it difficult to cope with the immigration flood from europe itself into the country not to speak of Africa as well as a problem with illegal immigrants from africa which is a problem in europe anyway, so put things in perspective. The visas won't be coming easy anymore. You think some members of the house from Nigenria of all places with a history of corruption and shady dealing will become priority??

Members of the house of assembly, ESPECIALLY at national level are very lucky i am not in charge of issuing visas out of the country honestly. Everywhere will be blocked, not even to travel to dafur. For each significant bill passed a new country would be opened as a destination and no member will travel anywhere outside Nigeria until the FOI bill is passed. When the FOI bill is passed then cameroun would be opened. When whatever bill needs to be passed to sort out the whole free trading in tinapa issue is worked out then benin would be open for travel. By the time europe (before even speaking of america) becomes a destination you know work has been done. Travel expenses to europe? Each member will have allowance of 100euros or £70 (what?, they can pack bole and sandwich from Nigeria).

Leadership positions are too attractive in Nigeria and come with too many perks, given the state of the country.

That's almost equivalent to kidnapping them.

@RedHotChic, how is that even remotely close to kidnapping them? Does that mean that citizens of the country who due to innactions and non chalant attitudes of the members of the house as well as the endemic corruption who do not have a means to leave Nigeria are all kidnapped? What are the house members going to find outside of their constituencies when even Bankole has said that the house is seriously lagging behind in its duties? How many bills have been passed out of those submitted, and they are travelling abroad as if it is their backyard? That is the height of insensitivity to the masses the house is supposed to represent. Everything is dissolved into committees which is just a front for making money and telling them to stay in the country and perform their duties is equivalent to kidnap? Please do elaborate

Most of them stayed on their own accord while the ones that wants to leave but couldn't were because they couldn't procure a visa. Holding somebody hostage against his/her own will is kidnapping. In your own case, you said you'll not only frustrate movement, but you'll make sure they are holed in Nigeria as long as you can. Now, that's kidnapping.
Re: Uk Embassy Rejects 14 Lagos Lawmakers Visa by SkyBlue1: 10:43pm On Jun 28, 2008
So according to you then, if every country in the world decides to deny Nigerians visas then we are a "kidnapped" people? So people who are refused visas are "kidnapped? People who can't leave the country because they can't afford to due to the appaling state of things only exarcebated by such atrocious leadership and direction are "kidnapped"? Nigeria is not big enough to move in?
Re: Uk Embassy Rejects 14 Lagos Lawmakers Visa by Kobojunkie: 2:15am On Jun 29, 2008
I wonder how much these members spend each year for travel abroad, compared to how much work they actually get done working for Nigeria.

its funny how the only thing SOME people are raising eyebrows about is the denial of the uk visas. i think the british just saved us a bunch of money by rejecting their visa applications! i am not quick to criticizing, but should we not hold our govt. accountable for spending our money on frivolous things as such

$1500 ? You are too generous to these legislators. You seem to presume they would have booked economy class.
