The Case For The Creation Of Orimili State From Anambra. by Kingsley1000(m): 5:43pm On Oct 08, 2013 |
The essential case for State creation in the structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is that it ensures the even dispersal of executive attention to all parts of our great nation spread out over 923,000 square kilometers of land. It also makes development available to all citizens wherever they may reside. In the case of ORIMILI State, it is self-evident that in the vast stretch of land covering Ayamelum, Anambra West, Awka North and Ogbaru local government areas, there is no modern urbanization, no industries, no substantialbusiness establishments, no Federal presence and limited State presence. The demand for a new State in this region is an initiative to take twenty-first century development into an otherwisealmost totally neglected part of the nation. The specific case for the creation of ORIMILI State is basedon the need to achieve zonal equity in the political structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The North West zone has seven States; North East, North Central, South-South and South West zones have six States each. Only South East zone has five States. The discriminatory and inequitable implications of this structural imbalance has adverse effects on the South East in its entitlements to federal ministerial and other appointments, its share on a quota basis of judicial, military and civil service positions, in the allocation of revenue and in the distribution and weight of Federal presence in the South East zone. The structural disability of the South East seems a punitive aftershock of the civil war. Most Nigerians now recognize that, forty years after the end of that unfortunate conflict, it is time to sheath the sword, bury the hatchet, and reunite the nation in brotherhood and equity. The case was eloquently made by speakers from all parts of Nigeria during the 2005 National Conference for Political Reform. A decision was reached in that conference that the civil war was over; the South East zone should therefore be given a sixth State as an equitable gesture made without prejudice to any other demands for additional States to be created within the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Within the South East zone itself, the equitable basis for the sixth State to be created out of Anambra State is that Anambra State is the most populous State in the zone. The 2006 National Population Census report published in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette No. 2 Vol. 96 Abuja – 2nd Feb. 2009 page B23 shows the population figures for the different South- East States as follows: 1. Ebonyi 2,176,947 2. Abia 2,845,380 3. Enugu 3,267,837 4. Imo 3,927,500 5. Anambra 4,177,828 Top of page Furthermore Anambra and Imo States have not been revisited in any state creation exercise in Nigeria since October 1991 when Ebonyi was created out of Enugu and Abia States. The history of State creation in the South- East is as follows: (i) On 27th May, 1967, the Federal Military Government decreed twelve (12) states and lumped mainland Igbos into EastCentralState. (ii) On 3rd February, 1976 the Federal Military Government decreed additional seven states. East Central state was split into Anambra and Imo states (iii) On 27th August 1991, the Federal Military Government decreed nine (9) more states among which are Abia and present AnambraState. What was left to the old AnambraState became EnuguState. (iv) On 1st October 1996, the Federal Military Government again decreed additional six states. Abakaliki Senatorial District of Enugu State and Afikpo/Ohozara Senatorial District of Abia State were constituted into the present EbonyiState. The interesting development from the above history is that the two senatorial districts of Enugu and Nsukka constituted the present EnuguState.Afikpo/Ohozara Senatorial District from AbiaState merged with Abakaliki Senatorial District from EnuguState to become the present EbonyiState. Subsequently, each of the three newStates –Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi - had their two Senatorial districts converted to three Senatorial Districts. With its overwhelming population in the Zone, Anambra State therefore, deserves the first option of consideration as the State from which any new State in the South- East zone should be excised. |

Orimili state ko,Mbamili state ni. The only state that need be created in Igboland right now is Anioma state n then be brought into the wider Biafra/Southeast region of Nigeria, should we finally decide to go the way of regions as federating units. 1 Like |

Perceived marginalization shouldn't be the criterion for a group to opt out of the bigger Anambra State. Otherwise, Adada State request has been around for a long while, longer than all others. There's also Aba State, Orlu State. All basing their demands on perceived marginalization. If a new state should be created, it should be Anioma. From Asaba to Agbor should be merged with Onitsha to create the new state seeing as they are culturally homogenous and contiguous geographically. That will also end the Delta-Ibo isn't Igbo debate. Anambra will likely kick against this, but it's rather in the interest of Igbos in general. Besides, Anambra will still have Nnewi. Or, we could settle for the far less strategic and dreary Etiti aka Equity state to be carved out from the present 5 Southeastern states. |

I wonder why someone will be asking for the creation of a state that's just about the size of Okene in Kogi state. The only viable Igbo state right now is Anioma. And we all should strive to see that it comes to fruition, with Anioma state, the SE would get additional landmass,Which would mean more Lawmakers in the National assembly(unlike if a new state was created from SE),more infrastructure(there's already a standard airport in Asaba E.T.C anything short of this is a sham! |

No be only Orimili state na even Mbano state (sighs), because politicals parties no gree put person of anambra north abi, The only viable state to be creation for the SE is Anioma state which is over due, this will bring the geo-political zone to 6 states but if it must be seven states then Anioma nd Equity is ok, any other agitations is for selfish reasons. |
