They would often tell the dead, “Rest in peace” as part of the comfort ritual, and for those who have paid the traditional condolence visit to the family of late Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry, those comfort-words must have flowed. However, indications are that Tonye may not be allowed to rest in peace, after all. Politicians who have denied the living peace may be on a mission to drag the late Tonye into their nest of satanic verses. Tonye’s is only a corpse meant for one casket and one grave but already, there are two burial committees. The raging bestial, political combat in the state may just deny Tonye a peaceful interment.

Governor Chibuike Amaechi, who led a delegation of the State Executive Council for a condolence visit to the family of the late lawmaker, had promised a “state burial” for Tonye. The Rivers State Government has constituted a Burial Committee which has commenced preparations. The governor’s visit was last Tuesday.

Amaechi had told the grieving family, “The government is prepared to participate in the (state) burial. The government is prepared to listen to the family and know what to do to assist the family especially with the young children that he has left behind.”

But today(Friday), precisely one week after Tonye’s demise, Mr. Evans Bipi, who represents Ogu/Bolo in the state House of Assembly, led a team of 5 renegade lawmakers opposed to the administration of Governor Amaechi to the family of Tonye. The group said it was on a condolence visit, too.

But in a manner familiar with antecedent, Mr. Bipi said he was setting up a ‘burial committee’ into which he ‘appointed’ some names. Recall that Bipi had on Tuesday July 9, led a revolt against the leadership of the State House Assembly, one that was massively crushed. Up until date, the House remains sealed with the National Assembly taking over its functions. Since that failed revolt, Mr. Bipi has not failed to parade as a speaker-in-absentia.

Our reporter sought the reaction of Hon. Onari Brown, Chairman, House Committee on Information and Training, on the brewing double wahala for dead body.

Brown captured his reaction thus, “It(Bipi’s comment) is the ranting of someone seeking relevance. We have just one Speaker(Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amachree). The governor in his magnanimity has promised to give him(Tonye) a state burial. That’s what stands. We don’t have two governors in Rivers State. Please, ignore any other thing you may have heard. Don’t give that any attention.”

Our reporter could not reach Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications as calls made to her telephone line bounced back. Either Mrs. Semenitari was outside network coverage area or had her telephone switched off at the time of our call. However, calls made to David Iyofor, Governor Amaechi’s Chief Press Secretary, and Tams Dede,Director of Press, Rivers State House of Assembly, which all rang out, were neither picked nor returned by the time of this report.[i]source : the neighbourhood
