Sahara Reporters receives $450,000 grant from the Omidyar Network

Nigeria’s Sahara Reporters has been announced as one of the selected media organizations awarded by Omidyar Network, a philanthropic venture firm that invests in both non-profit and for-profit media ventures.

The company received about $450,000 to support their work over a period of three years. During the 3rd plenary session of the 2011 World Press Freedom Day conference in Washington DC, Stephen King, Omidyar Network’s Director of Investments announced that they were awarding about $5 million to four independent media organizations working to foster journalism practice and freedom of expression.

As published on the WPFD’s blog, in a press release, King said, “Omidyar Network believes a healthy government—one that is responsive to its citizens—requires a healthy, robust fourth estate.” He added, “By focusing additional efforts on fostering investigative and citizen journalism, we believe we will be catalyzing transparency efforts that will positively affect millions of people.”

Omoyele Sowore, Saharareporters.com’s founder who served as one of the speakers during the event, said that the grant will help expand the frontiers of their operations adding that the grant also reaffirms that their work at Sahara Reporters is legitimate and innovative. The other organizations that also received the grant include: African Media Initiative, $1.7 million over two years; Media Development Loan Fund, $2 million; and the Committee to Protect Journalists, $800,000.

The Omidyar Network recently funded Enough is Enough Nigeria. To learn more, read this post.

take dat: Hypocritical 9gerian, Blame SR for exposing the wrath in our system. What new thing has the aviation spokesman said, 'that Stella is a rich and successful business woman who has made her mark in the oil and gas industry so what is two cars to her'? Isn't this a disgraceful response from a public official? In the face of damning evidence published by SR to expose such profligacy under the supervising eyes of the minister, all the spokesman could muster was that it is a rumor and politically motivated. One would have expected sensible comments such as, 'the minister is going to look into it' or 'the minister has ordered for a probe into the accounts of NCAA'. But no, he isn't concerned about the wasteful act rather he prefers to protect the personality of the minister. Orji Kalu, Atiku and several other politicians were successful and well established before venturing into politics, only for them to spend tax payers fund on frivolous things they could easily afford on their own. Every politician, rich or poor sees the public treasury as his or her private purse.

Bang on the money as usual @take dat

A different day or week from now, the same commentator will be back quoting SR with relish.

The status quo has been bad power, so that isnt news. What is news is that the power is improving and getting stable. The stability and regularity of the power supply is even more important than the increase in time itself. Most people understand that improved power is not expected to happen overnight. By this time next year, with the new DISCOs settled and at least 10, 000MW, we will be on another level entirely. Slow and steady wins the race. The opposition has been throwing the kitchen sink so nothing new here! We keep moving forward ever! grin

Unlike you who regales in conjecture and what not, I generally try to support any assertions I make with a reference.
All I did in my post was to introduce one verifiable source of SR's funding, nothing more.

Since you've fallen back on the time-honoured tradition of maligning the folks at that media-outfit, why don't you now go one step further to provide evidence of inducement which the rest of us can appraise.

Unlike you, I'm not here to side with anybody whether Mr. Tinubu or Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, I will only assess things based on facts and not on sentiments or emotions. As I said SR has run a story with documents to back it up, instead to claim its the work of the opposition without tangible paperwork to prove otherwise then that means something is wrong. I'm not saying the aviation ministry should be condemn right about now but the response by the ministry spokesperson was weak and childish, let the ministry refute the claims with solid fact and document to prove and not the "she too rich to ask anybody to buy her cars" that sound silly.

unfortunately several people were looking forward to this 2-3 years now what with higher tarriffs to attract investors -without commuserate provisons-prepaid meters, prompt pole repairs, crazy charges etc etc not that they didnt want it to work they just believed people esp in leadership positions that promised something by a certain period should deliver as promised!

The matter should be referred to EFCC for investigation or are they trying to say all the material evidence tendered are also rumors? The men that signed the documents perhaps are ghost workers and have never been in the employ of NCAA.

SaharaReporters provides an update on this developing story

Nigeria's Minister of Aviation Armored BMW Car Scandal: Car Sells For Only $170K In Europe And America

Following yesterday’s revelation by SaharaReporters that a cash-strapped agency of the Ministry of Aviation purchased two armored BMW 760 Li cars for the private use of Aviation Minister Stella Oduah, several automobile sales companies have indicated that the cars were massively overpriced.

Our report yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) paid approximately $1.6 million to buy the two cars from Coscharis Motors Limited in Lagos, meaning that each car cost close to $800,000. But our investigations with car sale companies revealed that the NCAA could have got eight, not two, BMW armored cars for their money.

According to Vista BMW in Coconut Creek in Florida, a fully armored BMW 760 Li car built to withstand AK 47-7.62x39 ammo and lower caliber weapons costs only $162, 195. Also, a quote provided by the armored car ballistic division of the International Armoring Corporation in Centerville, Utah revealed that each of the BMW cars could have been provided to the NCAA for $200,000 plus the cost of shipping to Nigeria.

SaharaReporters contacted other automobile sales companies in Europe who quoted even slightly lower prices for the model of the armored car purchased by the NCAA for Ms. Oduah’s personal use.

The two black BMW Li HSS vehicles had chases numbers WBAHP41050DW68032 and WBAHP41010DW68044 respectively were manufactured in Germany in 2008 according to investigations carried out about the models of the two cars by SaharaReporters.

Several officials of the Nigerian aviation authority told SaharaReporters that they were dismayed that the minister demanded that two expensive armored cars be purchased for her from the small and inadequate operating budget of the NCAA. As one of the officials stated, “We cannot even send our staff to critical training sessions, we cannot afford to update our equipment, and we need to employ more staff to ensure that every plane flying in Nigeria’s airspace is airworthy.”

Nigeria has been dogged by air crashes in the last few years, with more than 140 lives lost.

“If you consider all the priorities we have, but we don’t have the funds to meet, it is unfair that the Honorable Minister for Aviation, Mrs. Oduah, approved for us [the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority] to purchase two BMW armored cars through Coscharis Motors Limited for almost $800,000 each,” said a senior officer at the agency.

Meanwhile, since our report came out yesterday, some officials in other agencies under the Ministry of Aviation have revealed to SaharaReporters that the minister is pressuring them to make available the N150 million each to “settle” lawmakers at the National Assembly who are have scheduled a probe of the ministry on their return from the Sallah break.

One of the sources told our correspondent that Ms. Oduah had already received N300 million from two of the agencies and may have funneled the bribe funds to lawmakers who have summoned her to appear before them following the recent crash of an Associated Airline flight.[/b] The flight, which was conveying the remains of former Governor Olusegun Agagu of Ondo State, crashed on October 3, 2013 near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Fifteen people died in the crash, with several, including Mr. Agagu’s son, wounded.

The minister of aviation oversees 6 agencies in charge of aviation matters in Nigeria, namely: Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) , Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and Nigerian College Of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria. Of the six agencies, FAAN and NCAA remains most notorious for corruption and has served as the minister's cash cow.

SAHARA-REPORT has been an agent of PROPAGANDA , same Sahara reported that Mr.President went to USA with 600 delegates , I really wondered where the 599 would seat/sit in the UNSUMMIT hence seat are strictly by invitation .

I guess they want her out of her seat due to incompetence, but how could our aviation encounter numerous crash within a short term which was deem act of God (I doubt) because corruption could be the god who has acted towards the CRASH.

Former Avaition minister crashed in coffin,so strange and worrisom, the BB informed that the pilots were querrelling before the crash,CORRUPTION is just the reason of the numerous bad news in the avaition sector.
