The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, on Thursday, said Nigeria was capable of generating 160,000 megawatts before the end of 2014.

Nebo made the remark in Abuja at the Nigeria International 4th Power Expo and Conference, organised by the Ministry of Power and BKG Company.

“Two weeks ago, the Geregu Power Plant was commissioned by Mr President and he would commission all the 10 NIPPs’ power plants by the end of 2014.

“Nigeria produces and consumes 4,000mw of electricity, only 2.5 per cent of what South Africa is producing and consuming.

“Nigeria needs to increase electricity generation by 40 joules before the end of 2014, then it would be talking of 160,000 mw,” he said.

Nebo stressed that opportunities to make this happen abound in the country, adding that this also depended on investors venture into power sector by utilising the 4th expo conference.

Nebo added that the services companies -generation, transmission and distribution network- were to ensure that all the plants were running very well.

He stated that the ministry was partnering with investors to ensure that rural areas not connected to national grid were connected even to renewable sources of electricity.

He listed the renewable energy sources as biomass, solar, gas turbine, hydro turbine and wind, among others.

Nebo said that when the rural communities of Nigeria had been electrified, it would have multiplier effects on development, stressing that income, standard of living and job opportunities would increase.

He said that President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated Power Sector Roadmap in August 2010 in order to liberalise the sector from public driven economy to private driven one.

He said there were only 150,000 telephone lines for over 150 million people when NITEL was not privatised, but with privatisation, the country now had over 120 million lines.

Earlier, Mr Ifeanyi Agwu, the Executive Director of BKG, commended President Jonathan for ensuring that the power sector was privatised.

The 160,000 MW would be excess, as Nigeria needs around 50,000mW in order to ensure 24-hr power supply in all areas.
My cynical mind thinks that there wouldn't be more than 10,000 MW added by the next year.

This is a good thing for these rural areas. Civilization pushes the economy. More jobs, better pay and living conditions for those areas. I hope it happens.

South Africa generates 40 000 MW not 160 000 . A lot of things is wrong with this article.

Hmmm, why do so many scoff at this? It would be a shame if it does not happen. Nigeria needs this kind of thing. The possibilities for good are far reaching. This will effect the economy in those regions not yet serviced. It will produce jobs, raise the standard of living, bring in better healthcare facilities and new businesses. That in return produce revenue. In the end All of Nigeria wins.

I see so much division and back biting going on here in NL. It obviously goes on in real life too. Until Nigeria becomes ONE, (Together-ONE-Mighty) and starts to think as one country, it will not live up to the potential I, and others see so clearly. Please, stop making fun of potential progress and get behind it. No matter where it is happening. Give Naija the chance to live up to that potential.

Ah..Madam Berem, this testimony from your own mouth, Bible no dey lie o

The Bible is indeed right when it said he makes your enemies to be at peace with you.

GEJ will continue to surprise his critics, even a fisherman can perform all these, then there's hope for Nigeria.

That figure has to be a typo! At $1million per MW, $160 billion would be required to achieve that figure. Even if Eistien were to be the minister of power, that is an unrealistic projection.

Electricity is used for a lot more than powering peoples houses dude, there are these things called businesses, some of them are very heavy duty. It is sad that you didn't know that.

I know that. But even if you add all the businesses and homes, I don't think they would consume anywhere near 160,000MW. At best, it would be around 50,000-60,000mw

you better stop dreaming and I am not allergic to good news as long as I benefit from it. There's been improvement in electricity in my hood and I am very happy about it. I remember some few months back when I complained bitterly about electricity in my area. I didn't hide my feelings on this forum. Today,I am very happy to see 20 hours of electricity daily in my house.

Professor Chinedu Nebo, and the federal Government of Nigeria, are so funny, speaking up and down, a question to the Prof. Wat is wrong if the issue of electricity is handed complectly to private investors to handle? Just like we have Globacom, Zain, Mtn, Etisalta in the telecom sector etc, and consumers can now choose the one they can afford and der will even be competition among firms, and der will be free entry and exit in the market by all, Nigeria is the only country that the govt, manages her electricity distribution, this is a shame.
