Power steering fluid is being exchage for Automatic Transmission Fluid(ATF) even when the instructional manual of the car insists on using authorized power steering fluid. Infact, those guys that are into the business of selling engine oil/fluid will tell you that "it is the same thing". So, are they really the same? |

@femi4 Yes... they are both hydraulic fluids... the only difference is trans fluid is dyed red for leak detection. |

The common Dexron II/III is indeed red, and it is used in both power assisted steering systems, as well as in automatic transmission, where Dexron is specified. However, Dexron (red) is not hydraulic fluid. The mineral hydraulic fluid (green) used in certain power steering systems - Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls Royce,Citroen etc is CHF-11S, and is not used in transmissions. 1 Like 1 Share |
