Ethiopian Airlines To Begin Flights To Kano by abu12: 9:52pm On Nov 10, 2013
The Ethiopian Airlines is to begin 10-weekly flights to Kano, Nigeria, within the next few weeks, following an agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia.
Col. Wesenyeleh Hunegnaw, the Director-General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), told newsmen that the agreement was signed on Wednesday, 6 November, in Addis Ababa between the Government of Ethiopia and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The agreement by the two governments would increase operations from the current 18 weekly flights to 31 weekly flights in the coming weeks.
The Ethiopian Airlines would operate seven weekly passenger flights and three weekly cargo flights to Kano, in addition to its current flights to Abuja, Lagos and Enugu.
NAN reports that part of the agreement would allow one Nigerian airline to equally fly the Ethiopian route to Addis Ababa and other cities in Ethiopia, while enabling the training of Nigerian aviation staff by the Aviation Institute in Addis Ababa.
Mrs Precious Mbupka, who led officials from the Ministry of Aviation, signed for the Federal Government, after several negotiations on the terms and financial benefits of the flight operations between the two countries.

What is she waiting for before now?

Turkish and Emirate were granted permits since march, why are they not flying to kano?? But again, you people are too silly to figure out the truth before you make noise.

Turkish, Emirates To Fly To Kano By Month’s End

Turkish and Emirates airlines will begin their operations in Kano by the end of March, Aviation Minister Stella Oduah said on Friday at the commissioning of the remodeled Aminu Kano International Airport.

She said this was part of the ministry’s efforts of reviving the lost glory of the airport. The plans by some foreign airlines to fly to Kano became controversial last year when reports say the minister blocked them and instead asked them to fly to Enugu, allegations she denied.
When she visited Kano on Friday, the minister promised Emir Ado Bayero and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso that by the end of March, Turkish and Emirates airlines would begin operations in Kano. The remodeled Kano airport was commission by governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
He said, “For those who want to believe that the Ministry of Aviation doesn’t want international airlines to come to Kano, the question is if the ministry doesn’t want the international airlines to come to Kano why would they be building an international terminal? “Building of an international terminal is an evidence of commitment to encourage more international airlines to come Kano.”

While some people see it as good news, this is actually bad for the economy of Nigeria and death sentence for local airlines.

No international airline should be allowed to land and take off from four different airports in the country. They should pick two.

Either you take Lagos and Kano or Abuja and Enugu.

Why not, they should allow airlines land where they want. The more the better, it will begin to push down airline ticket prices into this country.

If they want to pick passengers from anywhere, they should partner with local airlines. Its that simple

They are only picking international passengers. The local airlines should find ways to attract mid-class Nigerians. Flying local in Nigeria, is way too high. Imagine Lagos---Warri is N36,000. why?

Look at it this way,
When Arik air travels to the US, it only lands in New York.
If you try going to Ohio in the US with KLM, Airfrance, Lufthansa, they will drop you in New York and put you on a local airline. This is the same with many other cities in the US.
International airlines should only be allowed two entry points into Nigeria.

That's correct. There are airlines that fly into multiple cities in the United states too. I am for more landings, restrictions has not done us any good, but keep prices high.

Airlines landing in multiple cities in Nigeria won't guarantee price reduction. In my opinion, i think airline prices are high due to the "high cost of doing business" in the country.

Nigeria is a complex and complicated country. If you dont allow international flights into certain regions, it will be mis-interpreted. Atleast, for the sake of equity and fairness, every geopolitical zone should be given slots of international flights. The challenge is for the ministry of aviation, while granting these slots to international airlines, to do it in such a way that Nigeria will have something in return.
