Comparison between the different tpyes of rice
Health conscious individuals or those with special nutritional needs are often recommended to consume colored rice in place of the more popular type of rice: white rice. It is said that of the three colors, brown and red bring more nutritional benefits to the consumer than white rice. Below is a short comparison of these variants of rice.

Brown Rice

Any variety can be considered as brown rice as long as it has been partially hulled to keep the bran or germ that covers the kernel. It is chewier than white rice, has a nutty flavor, and is also loaded with nutrients coming from the bran. The germ that is left intact has fats that can spoil, and these make brown rice grow quickly stale compared to white rice. Brown rice is also more expensive because they are not as easily available, spoil faster and more challenging to transport.

A cup of brown rice provides 14% of the daily value needed for fiber. Fiber is known to have numerous health benefits; some of which are its ability to reduce high cholesterol, keep blood sugar level under control, help prevent colon cancer and reduce the occurrence of constipation. A cup of brown rice also provides 88% of the recommended daily intake for manganese. Brown rice has also been noted to be an excellent source of selenium and magnesium and includes considerable amounts of iron, protein and a number of B-vitamins as well.

White Rice

White rice has been milled to the point where the husk and bran are stripped away. It is then polished until it is white and shiny. The removal of the nutritious bran and germ, plus all the polishing, makes white rice less nourishing than other colored rice. To compensate for the decrease in vitamins and minerals, suppliers are offering white rice enriched with essential nutrients (such as thiamine a.k.a. vitamin B1) that had been removed when they were milled. However, despite the effort to infuse nutrients lost during the milling process, enriched white rice are still cannot offer the same nutritional content as that of other colored rice.

Red Rice

Red rice can refer to many forms of rice. One common description is that red rice is partially hulled or unhulled rice that have red husks. They are similar to brown rice in terms of the milling process, and they also have a nutty taste and provide high nutrition. Red rice can also mean ‘red yeast rice,’ which is a product offered by Japan and China. Red yeast rice may be eaten as regular rice or a medical ingredient as part of dietary treatment for a variety of health conditions such as indigestion, harmful cholesterol, and blood circulation concerns. Lastly, red rice can also mean a wild rice variety that is regarded as a weed because it produces very few grains and can cross-breed with regular rice, resulting in low-quality rice crops.

Anthocyanins are the pigments that give the rice its red color. Anthocyanin is a known antioxidant that is linked to lowering the risk of developing several chronic health conditions. Similar to brown rice, red rice is found to be rich in fiber, iron, zinc, B vitamins and even calcium.

These alternatives to white rice make living a healthy lifestyle a bit easier. While switching from white to colored rice may take some getting used to, the nutritional benefits colored rice brings make the switch worthwhile.
