The population of Nigeria has been projected to be 440.4 million by mid-2050 and 239.9 million by mid-2025.
The Population Reference Bureau made these projections in its recently released 2013 World Population Data Sheet, which put the country’s population, as of the end of June this year, at 173.6 million.
SUNDAY PUNCHanalysis showed that in 2050, Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world, just behind India and China, who will have populations of 1.65 billion and 1.31 billion respectively.
This means that over the period of 37 years, Nigeria’s population figures will overtake those of the United States of America, which will be 399.8 million in 2050; Brazil, which will be 227.5 million; Pakistan, which will be 363.2 million; and Indonesia, which will be 366.2 million.
The statistics showed that Nigeria’s mid-2013 population was 52. 4 per cent of West Africa’s 331 million population and 15.8 per cent of Africa’s population of 1.1 billion.
According to the PRB population data sheet, children, aged 15 and below, make up 44 per cent of Nigeria’s population, while elders, aged 65 and above, constitute only three per cent.
It also noted that about 50 per cent of the country’s population reside in urban areas and put the percentage of the population that use improved sanitation at 33 per cent for urban areas and 28 per cent for rural areas.
Nigeria’s birth rate was put at 42 births per 1000 population, while its death rate was put at 13 deaths per 1000 population. Life expectancy stood at 51 for males and 52 for females.
On the percentage share of income, the data sheet showed that Nigeria’s poorest 20 per cent population earn six per cent the nation’s income, while the wealthiest 20 per cent earn 46 per cent of the nation’s income.
The statistics showed that Tokyo remains the most populous city in the world with a population of 37.2 million. It is followed by Delhi with 22.7 million, Mexico City with 20.5 million, New York 20.4 million, Shanghai 20.2 million, Sao Paulo 19.9 million, Mumbai 19.7 million and Beijing 15.6 million.
The population of Lagos was put at 11.2 million, that of Cairo 11.1 million; Paris 10.6 million; and London 9.0 million.
The PRB population clock showed that the world population is about 7.1 billion, with 1.24 billion in more developed countries and 5.89 billion in less developed countries.
It also showed that at least 271 babies are born globally per minute; 390, 778 babies per day; and 142, 634, 000 babies per year.
Also, at least 106 persons die globally per minute; 153, 351 persons per day; and 55, 973, 000 persons per year.
According to a press statement by PRB, Africa’s population is expected to more than double, rising from 1.1 billion today to at least 2.4 billion by 2050.
The President and Chief Executive Officer of PRB, Wendy Baldwin, was quoted as saying, “Nearly all of that growth will be in the 51 countries of sub-Saharan Africa, the region’s poorest,” adding that “rapid population growth makes it difficult for economies to create enough jobs to lift large numbers of people out of poverty.”
