Lagos Population Now Thought To Exceed 20m People (12% Of Nigeria's Population)

The Lagos State government has put the current population of the state at around 21 million, making it 10 per cent of Nigeria’s population, which was recently put at 167 million by the National Population Commission. - (err, actually 12%)


In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, said even though the state had yet to conduct another census, it established that the population was 18 million in 2006.

He said, “Although, we have not conducted any census since 2006, we however counted 18 million residents. By our projection, population should now be about 20 to 21 million.”

The increase of 18 million in 2006 to 21 million in 2011, means that the state’s population rose by an average of half a million annually.

Ibirogba attributed the rise in population to the fact that Lagos is the social and commercial hub of the country.

In response to grim predictions of overpopulation and environmental disasters in Lagos, the commissioner said the state government was aware of the projections and was consciously investing in transportation, security, housing, health care and the environment to mitigate the possible effects of overpopulation.

He said “From the 1960s, Lagos has always been the centre of attraction. Lagos always had large population. Out of every 10 Nigerians, nine want to come to Lagos. Many people think it is classy to live and own a house in Lagos. About 60 per cent of school leavers want to get a job in Lagos. Our state is cosmopolitan in nature with people of diverse backgrounds. It has always been like this, so there is nothing to suggest a population explosion. Nothing is getting out of hand.”

He added, “Because of the need to maintain the facilities on ground as we build new ones, government has given everybody the task of protecting available facilities.

“We are investing in every sector of our society. Recently we delivered 429 housing units to Lagosians and we are working on facilities in our hospitals and schools. We are also increasing efforts to ensure that traffic is flowing freely.

“We are telling people if you don’t have anything doing on the road, stay at home and do your business on the phone. We have also built jetties in different places to boost water transportation and our light rail project is on. So generally, if you look at all these, you will know that we are managing our population well, so there cannot be population explosion in Lagos.”

Ibirogba also debunked rumours that the state government had given transport fares to indigent, jobless residents, sending them back to their hometowns.

It has nothing to do with having children. Its just that too many people are moving to lagos. When the FG lessens corruption and tribal bigotry then there will be a decrease in population in lagos.

This is a big opportunity for investors, both international and local.
For the local, buying acres of lands within the outskirts of Lagos such as Mowe-Extension will be a big life time investment. Doing so has its risks, but dealing with professional real estate agency with good reputation will go a long way in safe-guarding such investment.
Many investors who followed the visionary Pastor Adeboye and Oyedepo down to Mowe and Otta consecutively are probably the biggest benefactors from this population boon that has benefited Ogun state more than Lagos.
With locations such as Mowe, Ibafo, ofada, Owode, Ifo, Otta, Agbado, Magoro, Arepo, Atan, Wasimi, formerly called bushy-lands now the housing estates and locations for millions of ex-Lagosians, I think more and more Lagosians will mob the extensions of the above mentioned land.

Though, its been predicted this population will be hitting 30 million in the next 9 years, this means we will have 10 million babies within Lagos and Ogun States, and they will require some needs. This will include building or owning a school or running day care centers, or having a baby products line. The so-called 20 million is not just a blessing in disguise for people with foresight, it will be a life changer.

Thanks boss, but the link you posted says nothing about Lagos' GDP coasting within the $54bn mark. All it says is a rather rough estimate of the per capita, which it describes at 'about $3,000'.

@Topic: If the census figures of 2006 read 9 million, and then rise to double the amount in just 5 years, then that spells serious doom for Nigerian urban settlements in terms of population growth. No-one seems to be paying attention to the rate at which we're growing, and this is getting rather worrying. I'm really worried.

This is really sickening!!, the population growth of Nigeria is a ticking time BOMB, And until the government does something drastic about the state of other cities in Nigeria, people will keep on flooding into Lagos from all other parts of the country. How can a country of at leatt 150 Million not boast of at least 5 Mega cities, with good Infrastructure and world recognizable skylines?#


That is the prblem with Nigeria, everyone sees Lagos as the ''Big city''' and want to Migrate, because they see it as the only place to go for better opportunities. [Which is a very bad thing}

Some dumb heads here don't know difference between population growth due to high natality rate and rural-urban migration. Lagos state's is rue to d latter and not because of uncontrolled childbirths. I'm sure that lagos will rank least in term of average family size.

More people enter lagos daily for all sort of socio-economic reasons from virtually every state of d federation and west Africa subregion.
