POLITICS ASIDE: IDEMILI NORTH IS THE MOST
POPULOUS LGA OF ANAMBRA

Although I do not want to comment on the
inconclusive Anambra gubernatorial election, I
feel impelled to help straighten the debate on
Facebook about Idemili North and its
population.
Lets make it clear from the outset that there is a
thick difference between metropolitan population and resident population in planning/emergency services. While metropolitan population includes all those who come to a city to do business, school, work, pastor, etc in the day and leave for their cities/towns/villages of residence at the close of business, resident population deals with enumeration based on where one lives after work; that is, resident population studies where one sleep at night!
On the strength of the foregoing, while Onitsha
may have a metropolitan population of 1,003,000, its estimated resident population is
only 511,000 not minding the fact that MASSOB
messed up the 2006 census exercise in the city
which made its population under-counted (UN
Habitat 2008).
So the difference between Onitsha metropolitan population and resident population explains why Idemili North is the most populous LGA of Anambra State with 430,783 as at 2006 (National Population Commission 2006).
Again, it's a verifiable fact that over 60% of the
metropolitan population of Onitsha are residents in other towns, cities and villages like Asaba, Okpanam, Okpoko, Obosi, Nkpor, Ogidi, Umuoji, Oba, Nkwelle Ezunaka, etc.
So, Idemili North LGA, as a conurbation of
Onitsha commands a sizeable population of
Anambra State; thus, it's a big factor in Anambra
politics, and economy. Does Idemili North have
more than the INEC registered voters of173, 832
in reality? Yes, it does. Why? It's because commercial and economic activities in Onitsha
has forced development and population surge on it.
To understand the impact of Idemili North, the
LGA almost single-handedly returned a senator
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a recent
general election. But this fact does not mean
that the combined voting population of Idemili
North and South LGAs can return anyone duly
elected Governor of Anambra State. No, it's not
a fact!

I've argued this particular issue with Chino here on Nairaland. Even half of Awada is in Obosi which is Idemili. Ihiala is another populous LGA which people seem to neglect in Anambra. A proper census will give a clearer view and this is only resident populations as if one includes diasporan population, we should be talking of 1.5 to 2million people in these LGAs.
