President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has said he does not recognise the June 27 run-off in Zimbabwe in which the country's President Robert Mugabe stood as the only candidate and was returned to power.

I guess it is rather unfair to equate the Nigerian Election to what happened in Zimbabwe.

Though the Nigerian elections were rigged by all major parties involved, similar to the Bush/ Gore election, it is far from level of intimidation and imposition of Mugabe in Zimbabwe.

Also, the Yaradua election was challenged in the court of law, and it was found OK, based on whatever parameter used by the judges.

who is yar'adua to criticise the elections in zimbzbwe
the elction which brought him to power was even worse that the zimbabwean elections. at least before the re-run, the election authorities announced who the true winner of the elections were. the initial elections in zimbabwe were peaceful and almost totally devoid of violence. we cannot say thesame about the nigerian elections. yar'adua is just toeing the line of his imperialist masters, the british and the west. we'll whatdyu expect, he dosent have a mind of his own.
Yar'adua is living in a glass house and he is throwing stones.

Are you people forgetting that Mugabe led the charge to suspend Nigeria from the Commonwealth after the 'Ogoni 9' incident? Yar'Adua is only reciprocating Mugabe's hypocrisy.

Oh simply because the court approved of his election, he now thinks he is justifiable to talk?

I don't know why Thisday decided to spin Yardie's comments. . . . this is what he said

Africans must ensure that we anchor democracy on credible elections. We could not recognise the run-off election as the basis of a solution to the Zimbabwe crisis

What he is saying in essence, is that the crisis in Zimbabwe cannot be solved using the run-off as the basis, since there are outstanding issues which have little or nothing to do with the election itself. Now that could be interpreted as him not recognising the elections, OR not regarding it as the the solution - whoever wins the election will need to co-operate with the other party for peace to reign in Zimbabwe.

On the question of speaking out or not speaking out at the AU, here is an excerpt on what transpired

Summit sources told Reuters that the leaders were split between those who wanted a strong statement about Zimbabwe's election crisis and others who were reluctant to publicly censure the veteran leader.

Now it is not clear on what side Yardie was at the time, but I don't think anyone can say conclusively without evidence that he spoke out or did not speak out during the AU summit - he could easily have been in either camp.

l do not see any spin in thisday reporting. If they could not recognise the run-off election, it invariable mean they could not recognise the Mugabe's government, because it legality is derived from the run-off election. If you dont recognise the run-off election on any basis, then you dont recognise the government.

fraud in nigeria = fraud in Zimb. Whatever your level it is still equal to fraud . so stop trying to say the level of Yar adua 's fraud is far more better than mugabe own. One of the reason why africa remain where it is, people are always rationalizing stuff instead of dealing with it head on
