Stop comparing the price with what Americans pay. They're more opportuned and less inflated. We're just different economically.

i have friends there who go to see movies only on days it's cheap so get that mentality of being ripped off removed. U want better thing, u gotta pay for it. This guys run a business so please understand that.

[b]I'll ignore your questions, they're irrelevant.

My take is that Nigerians don't know how to run a business. Nigerians still think business is all about buying and selling to make profit No knowledge of business continuity or improvement.

NTA for example still uses the same cameras since 1960.

Nollywood don't send their actors for training exercises. No profession development courses etc.

No partnership with foreign film makers to understand how the industry work in the 21sr century.

They don't care about logistics (Movie review, suggestions, end user complaints, movie screening etc.)

Plagiarised scripts are a norm in Nollywood when producer A has the same movie script with producer B.

Producers don't like to spend money in film production despite that they have produced more that 100 movies in the past and made a lot of money from it.

They don't improve their equipment, same ol'cameras, costumes, tomato sauce blood.

Any jobless man can just port into acting as long as he knows someone in the movie industry.

No specialisation in acting roles in Nollywood. Emeka Ike can act love today, armed robber tomorrow, police man the next day, ritualist another day etc.

No use of green screen software / effects. Same white garment wearing powdered face spirit that looks left and right before he crosses the road.

Nollywood just doesn't know what business continuity means. I'll rather play baba ijebu with my money than buy/rent/see a Nigeria movie.

SO

POINT

Nigerian moviemakers are in it for the quick money, no passion to deliver quality stuff. Tade Ogidan and Tunde Kilani are exceptional.

I sorta agree with your other points. But remember that acting is not about specialization. If you specialize only in one area, you're not an actor but a performer. Even in Hollywood, stars like George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Jennifer Lawrence to name a few act different roles in many genres.

Wow, what a load of feedback. Thanks guys. I can deduce that its still a halfway spilt between the ayes(yes) and nays(no). But it seems everybody is all for paying cash at the gate. I have noticed the interest of those outside Lagos in having the cinemas. We were looking at starting in Lagos before but with this response we might find a way to start in select places outside Lagos. Thanks again for the responses even from those of you who hate Nigerian movies(I understand the pain. I was there once) We at Dreamplay entertainment will be rolling out our plans soon so watch this space for more details.

After watching The Figurine which I thought was quite brilliant. I would definitely go to a cinema to watch any of kunle afolayan's movies. He's just that thing the industry needs. The man with the midas touch... And yes, I could still possibly watch other Nollywood films IF AND ONLY IF they have terrific 'unpredictable' storylines. I'd be willing to let go between 200-500 max.

I understand that they're running a business, but if I can't afford it, I won't attend it. They've got to understand the damonic condition of the country and try as much as possible to suit the income per captia of Nigerians. If they produce a movie that can be favourably compared to the likes of Avatar, tag the tickets for 2000, some people will see the movie, but majority of the populace won't because they can't afford it. They'd rather wait for the pirated copy in DVD format. But if the price is within the range of 300 and 700, lots of people will definitely see the movie, assuming the problem of few cinemas is solved.

tony ayo: Before i'll give my answers, you need to know one thing lynx, the 'why Nollywood movies aren't making back the money they spent' isn't because of people not visiting the Cinema to watch Nollywood movies, it's because of few Cinemas in Nigeria. United State alone has up to a thousand standard Cinemas, assuming their standard Cinemas are not up to twenty, like Nigerian Cinemas, they'll be facing the same problem. The problem isn't people, the problem is, where are the Cinemas? Many States, not just cities, has no Cinema e.g Abia, Imo, Anambra, Delta etc. I myself have not been to Cinema for once, just because there's none in my city, you don't expect me to travel to Uyo, Calabar or PH only to watch a 2hrs movie. Guys and girls are kind of fed up with the regular drinking of beer, eating fast food and attending musical shows. Assuming we have Cinemas in every major cities alone, who'll be complaining of not getting back his money, unless the movie is crap. Genevieve, Ramsey, Omotola, Rita, O.C etc. Their fans want to see their recent movies as they just saw the trailer, we can't see them in alaba movies, they're now known as the new Nollywood acts.

My answers:

1) Yes (well shot)

2) #1000 max (only for a well shot)

3) Ofcourse (only to watch a well shot)

4) No

5) No

6) Hell No!

My question:

like how many standard Cinemas have we now, in total?
I quite agree with you and on the issue of the number of standard cinemas they are just so few!
Re: Will You Pay To Watch A Nigerian Cinema Movie? by Mrford(m): 3:33pm On Nov 27, 2013
I can't even think of it, I manage to see it at home talk less of seeing it in a cinema. I will just go for a foreign movie instead.

lynx200: As a scriptwriter and budding producer, I have noticed a disturbing trend. Most Nigerian movies that have been taken to the cinema in the last two years have hardly made the money invested in them which is driving away a lot of investors. At the typical Nigerian cinemas hardly anybody is ready to pay N1000 or more to watch a Nigerian movie that is not well publicized.(There are a few exceptions like "the meeting"wink Most cinema patronizers are from the upper middle and upper classes that turn up their noses at Nigerian movies whereas the true fans of these movies are in the high density areas. (Research have shown that Silverbird cinemas Uyo have the highest turnover for Nigerian movies)
Our company Dreamplay entertainment wants to show quality and cinema standard Nigerian movies in high quality venues in these low density areas (in multiple locations) starting with Lagos so we are doing some preliminary market research. Please answer the following questions as truthfully as possible.

1. Would you be willing to watch a well shot Nigerian movie at the cinema?
2. How much would you be willing to pay to watch such movies since we all agree that N1,500 for cinema ticket prices is a rip off.
3. If you stay in certain high density areas in Lagos like Mushin, Ajegunle, Ikotun etc will you go to a cinema there?
4. We intend to publicize these movies through social media. Will you willingly follow the exploits of the movie and its stars online?
5. We intend to book cinema viewers through the internet/social media. Would you be willing to book a cinema seat online?
6. Would you want to pay for your cinema ticket online, through your phone, ATM card or with cash at the gate?

Thank you for your anticipated response. If you have other questions you want to ask please let us know.

1. 'well-shot', well directed and splendid...Yes(tho I'm yet to see dt)

2. ₦500 and you'll supply me free refreshments

3. Yes

4. Yes (if I have megabyte)

5. No(9ja technological advancement still dey fear me)

6. ATM is fine by me, but bank networks dey f*ck up atimes, so cash comes in handy

safarigirl: A foreign movie can always be downloaded for free online, but till today, I'm yet to find Ije or that Through the Glass by Stephanie Okereke online or even in the market. People paid 1k to watch Django Unchained when it came out, me, I balance for house, download am free, I've watched it over 5 times and it's still on my phone, same as Avatar. If I went to see it at a cinema, it would've cost me no less than 3k.
Do you know that half of the people who went to see 'Django unchained' in US-Cinemas already have the ripped version at home? But that don't stop them going to the cinemas to raise over 425million bucks for the movie makers to get their money back.

They could have stayed in the comfort of their homes to watch it but rather chose to visit the cinema. Why? Because it is a culture!
Similar to the fastfood-going-culture where you would prefer to be taken to a fast food restaurant just to eat fried rice that we can both prepare in the kitchen at home!
Although this too is becoming unpopular and sometimes young lovers wouldn't have interesting places to go for dates.
That is why there is need for nigerians to embrace the cinema-going-culture!

when I don't have to cough out transport of at least 800naira going and coming, pay for a ticket of #1,500, not to mention buy common plastic bottle of coke for 300 and popcorn 800 naira(can you imagine?) I will happily spend my days and nights there. Where you want make studen manufacture over 3k(somebody's school fees) from? When I can watch the movie for free? Or do you want to sponsor me? I just go when pepper don rest or on my birthday, else, I stay home and wait for it to come online. A begger has no choice. As for the fast-food culture, I haven't gone to eat in one of those places in 2 years. Cinema going and fastfood are American cultures, have they copied our own?
