22- year-old Catherine Emmanuel of
Mutu Diya village in Agyaragu, the
headquarters of Jenkwe development
area of Nasarawa State allegedly
gave birth to a tortoise at Agwan Tiv
11 at the weekend.
The incident occurred in Agyaragu
town about 24 kilometers away from
the state capital about 12p.m. on
Saturday morning
Narrating her experiences to Daily
Independent in an exclusive interview
at her residence in Angwan Tiv 11,
Catherine said: “During the pregnancy
my stomach was growing up and
after some time it will subside up till
when the pregnancy got to seven
months I did not see anything again.
When I went to the hospital with my
husband for scanning to find out
whether the pregnancy was still there,
the doctor informed us that there was
no baby inside my womb. We
proceeded to another nearby hospital
in the same Agyaragu town where the
doctor told us that the only
alternative was to undergo surgery
but my father refused, saying “it will
be over his dead body and that there
was no reason to undergo an
operation.
According to her, she got married to
Emmanuel Abari three years ago and
God has blessed them with a baby
boy named Swando Emmanuel before
the unfortunate pregnancy.
Investigations by Daily Independent
however revealed that she had been
pregnant since March 2013, which
was also confirmed by a pregnancy
test carried out at the Agyarargu
General Hospital. Daily Independent
further gathered that when she went
for antenatal check up few months
into the pregnancy, she got the shock
of her life when she was informed by
the doctor that although her tummy
was protruding as though she was
pregnant, there was no baby in her
womb.
According to her, on receiving the
information, they consulted with
family members who agreed they
should invite Samuel Kwaga, a
renowned traditional herbalist from
Daudu village in Makurdi, Benue
State. She added that it was the
traditional doctor that gave her some
herbs resulting in her being delivered
of a tortoise.
Emmanue Abari, her 29 years old
husband and a graduate of Christian
Religious History from College of
Education, Gidiri in Plateau State said
he is full of appreciation to God for
spearing the life of his wife despite
bitter experience. “I felt bad and
disappointed because the first
pregnancy did not affect her like this
but thank God for saving my wife,” he
said.
On his part, the traditional herbalist
kwaga who spoke through an
interpreter said: “One Mr. Emmanuel
Abari came and called me that he
was having a problem with his wife
when I prepared the herbs for her and
when she drank the thing just came
out and surprisingly she gave birth to
a tortoise we couldn’t believe it.”
To this end, the traditional herbalist
after due consultation with the
relatives of the bride and groom
decided to bury the tortoise at about
5:55pm on Saturday shortly after
performing some traditional rites.
