ladepete: All this children sef. Have you forgotten ow the things goes. You have junior lecturers, lecturer 1, graduate assistant, senior lecturers, drs, associate professors, professors etc. When u sack all, where do u start from? Maybe we will start with prof jega, he will resign as inec chairman and resume as a lecturer in one of the unis, then GEJ was a lecturer, he will resign as the president and lecture in one of the zoology department in the numerous unis we have. Need I remind some people that the units are even short of lecturerers. I remember a lecturer handling 3 of my courses in 500l. Engineering for that matter. And you want to sack the ones u have? Maybe u guys want all ur lecturers to be graduate assistants/ junior lecturers.
You think experienced candidates will rush for the job so that tmr you can saack them too when they start making their demands too. Most of the students shouting they want to go back are just interested in the freedom,[b]scamming parents, partying, bleeping of babes, clubbingetc. Cos if you have a common sense you will knw the implications of what is happening. They tried during the military era without success. How long will the police remain on campuses, when they are meant to be out there fighting crimes.

Why are u guys getting angry this guys are demanding for money? @ least this guys are doing some measure of work unlike the govt officials that keep embezzling money without results. Less than 500 bunch of 'people' eat 30% of the annual budget every yr. Haba u people should think well on this.

Their salaries have been budgeted for. If they don't pay them who will eat the money? Do you guys actually prefer some bunch of politicians to actually eat that money again knowing fully well it will never fnd its way to the national treasury again rather it will be embezzled again with no records. FG caused the strike in the 1st place.

That is it,, fowl yansh don open. wink

hypenation: ASUU leaders are terrorist under the control of the opposition party! They will do anytin to hinder and destroy our education system. GEJ should disolve the association if he really want to put an end to this strike

I wonder how you reason. So ALL lecturers belong to the opposition? There are no PDP supporters, sympathizers or even relations of PDP politicians that are lecturers?

WHat this could mean is that learned, intelligent and upright people are not within the PDP fold.

May be there is market at Otuoke where they can go and shop for brand new lecturers cheesy

ASUU should be proscribe. Who said military failed in banning ASUU? In 1988 ASUU was banned for 2 good yrs. And in 1990 due to the calmness of ASUU, the military felt it will be nice to pardon them and reinstall ASUU. The military would ve as well banned ASUU permanently. Come 4th Dec, ASUU will be thrown out of the university community if they fail to call off the strike. This is nt a child threat, this is wat the FG ve already started. You can also see that the police are already on ground to boast security and arrest any aota of protest by the sackd lecturers. The FG ve foreseen ds coming, and they ve long ago even b4 the meeting with ASUU prepared 4 plan 'B'. So if u tink dat ds is a child threat, then, be prepare to start calling the FG names bc the lecturers, as many that will nt resume duty will be thrown out of the university environment.

tpapi: ASUU is askin where fg wil get lecturers to replace d strikin lectures, jus put out advert 4 lecturin vacancies, u go fear to see d amount of pple wey dey find lecturin job as dem go begin dey apply 4 dos jobs, nonsense
unfortunately unless FG is willing to employ 3RD class graduates and fill everywhere with graduate assistants with attendant reduction in the already bad quality of univ education, it's just not going to happen. In those days, we had indians teaching in our secondary schools nowadays they wont even touch our universities with a long pole.
For those complaining about the bad nature of lecturers, be rest assured that when FG does the needful and makes our univ's world class, the principle of natural selection will take care of the rottens eggs. So Oga Jona... Do the needful.

We are not in a military era. The use of such language by government will only fuel the suspicions of the striking lecturers. A typical lecturer is 10 years in the making, 20 years or more for Professors.

Ok, where will the government recruit the new lecturers from? FROM YOUR VILLAGE?

dabrake: The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government’s December 4 ultimatum issued to universities teachers to return to the classrooms is a clear indication that the government is not committed to implementing any of the resolutions it reached with the union.
While reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to sack the lecturers if they fail to call off their five-month strike by Wednesday nest week, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the union was shocked that the government could have such plan when there was a shortfall of 60,000 lecturers in Nigerian universities, owing to the government’s failure to employ enough teachers.

He added that the threat would not hinder the union’s determination to ensure that Nigerian universities were well funded.
He said, “It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with the union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000? We are not in a military era. THE MILITARY TRIED IT AND FAILED!!!!!!!!!. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut the universities; it was the school management that ordered the students to go back home.”
ASUU added that the FG was wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country by failing to perfect the resolutions so that classes could resume in the schools.
Making reference to the failure of the government to honour the agreements it entered with resident doctors and health workers after they suspended their strikes, the union said it had reasons to be wary of the government, adding that the threat was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting for the government for a positive reaction.
“With the latest action, the government has shown that it is not committed to all it has been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200bn is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?” Aremu said.

why is it that almost every post on this thread that supports the F.G's threat are by posters who can barely write intelligible English?

Is it that they were hired hurriedly without literacy screening just to defend this proposition?

or is it that they can't appreciate what standard in education is about b'cos they are barely educated?

or is it just me?

According to Wike, "we will not allow them hold us to ransom".

The core problem according to Wike is that they are holding us to ransom. Good!

Now let us do a little problem solving. The core problem is these lecturers hold us to ransom. Why?

Possibly because the demand for University tutors far exceeds the supply as can be seen in the tutor student ratio of about 500 to 1 tutor. Another problem, why?

Possibly because we have not been investing in bringing more tutors to reduce this gap.

Now let us turn these problems into solutions.

Solution, investing in research in the universities. Investing in new systems, facilities, equipments and tools to boost research in these universities.

Is this not what ASUU has been asking for? Can Wike not use ASUUs "wahala" to solve a problem?

But they are not interested as they are not change agents. They agents of theft, corruption and blackmail. They want the easy way of lies and deceit.

Can the FG not have a plan to grow the number of PhDs in our universities by 30000 in the next 5 years?

With an added advantage that these researches and researchers contribute to innovation and technical change in our country.
