Agagu Plans To Bribe Judiciary With N5bn-lp by inspiredm(m): 3:14am On Jul 28, 2008
…orders solidarity protests in Abuja

The Ondo State Labour Party (LP) on Sunday raised an alarm over the latest plans by the Dr. Olusegun Agagu’s Administration to pervert justice with the setting aside of a whopping N5billion from the State Government treasury to facilitate the procurement of what it termed a political judgment at the Court of Appeal following the nullification of Agagu’s election in the April 14, 2007 and the subsequent declaration of Dr Olusegun Mimiko of the LP as the duly elected Governor of Ondo State by the Justice Garba Nabaruma led Election Petition Tribunal last Friday.

LP, in a release signed by its Director of Press, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, disclosed that with Friday’s landmark judgment which sent the illegal sitting governor out of office, in panic, Agagu held a caucus meeting with a few of his top aides and members of his party at the Government House on Saturday where it was agreed that no amount of money would be spared in ensuring that the Appeal Court reverses the ruling of the Tribunal come what may.

“In their desperate bid to ensure that justice is perverted at all cost, it was agreed that the sum of N5bn already set aside for this purpose be immediately disbursed to some powerful interests in Abuja who would commence the facilitation of upturning the nullification of Agagu’s pyrrhic victory in the April 14, 2007 election.

“Aside from the plans to compromise the Judiciary and get a re-run verdict at the Appeal Court through this foul means, Agagu has also set aside the sum of N500m to embark on protest marches in Abuja by placard carrying groups at the Court of Appeal headquarters condemning the Judiciary for disenfranchising them by the judgment of the Tribunal. This will also be followed by series of sponsored media hypes in form of advertisements, sponsored hack writings condemning the Justice Nabaruma Tribunal’s judgment and series of paid for solidarity visits by numerous groups to Agagu in his office on a daily basis beginning from this week.”

While reaffirming its unshakable confidence in the Judiciary, the Labour Party in giving kudos to it for its landmark ruling in Ondo State, however stated that in view of this latest development, the whole world should be abreast of the latest in the arsenal of Agagu.

Says The Party: “We are thus calling on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Legbo Kutugi to kindly use his good offices to help foil this dastardly act of deliberate attempt to subvert justice and rape the people’s mandate all over again.

“And for the umpteenth time, we want to appeal to Mr. President, Alhaji Umar Musa Ya’Adua, a man noted for his firm believe in the Rule of Law, to kindly call Olusegun Agagu to order in this journey to self perdition as he is bound to fail again like he did at the Election Tribunal which he did all in his powers to bribe at all cost without success. Agagu must not be allowed to compromise the Judiciary for his selfish ends in the overall interest of the nation.

“The People of Ondo State on April 14, 2007 spoke with their votes when they voted for Dr Olusegun Mimiko as their Governor. Agagu stole this mandate through the barrel of guns with his band of rapacious aides and thugs. And like all civilized people all over the world, we took our case to the Court to retrieve this stolen mandate. For fifteen bitter months, we dug in despite numerous threats, harassments, intimidation and brutalization from Agagu and his minions and we were able to prove our case beyond all reasonable doubt. And on Friday, last week, the Judiciary, which we have all the while reiterated is above board, spoke very loudly when it told Agagu in clear terms that he did not win the April 14, 2007 election. Instead, it declared Mimiko as the duly elected Governor of Ondo State. Now, in his desperation to rape the Ondo State people’s mandate all over again, he has resorted to contaminating the Judiciary with tarnished dross. Rather than providing the people with the real dividends of democracy with the resources that accrue to the State on a monthly basis, he has started throwing around the people’s money with impunity, a development which has become the hallmark of his regime in the last 5 years in Ondo State and which eventually led to his rejection by the people.

“While we are not asking him not to go to the Appeal Court since that is his inalienable right as entrenched in the Constitution, we want him to let the wish of the people of Ondo State as emphatically stated on April 14, 2007 and which the Judiciary re-affirmed last Friday to prevail rather than trying embarking of a journey to nowhere albeit, at the expense of the harried taxpayers of Ondo State.”
