Do You Consider Nelson Mandela As An African/world Hero??? by sample042(m): 2:50am On Dec 16, 2013
Dear nairalanders, for some time now i've been trying to comprehend d reason why the South African apartheid fighter(Mandela) is been praised and given overrated attention even down here in Nigeria. I think the likes of ZIK, OBAFEMI, BELLO etc. Had a similar struggle in their own respective ways. For crying out loud, Mandela did all that he did for his country men(S.A) why should he be praised more than our Nigerian heroes or other world heroes?
Well, it may be a misconception from me but as far as am concerned, i don't see MADIBA as an African/World HERO. Am not a sadist.
Mind you, i like Mandela's guts and courage.
Please, i need your opinion on the above.
...Is mandela worth celebrating as an African/World hero rather than a South African hero?

It's just because of the love and passion you have for him else you won't consider what he did as an extreme act of forgiveness...
Moreover, he has no choice than to forgive his oppressors.
Think of the likes of Martin Luther king jnr, Samuel Akintola and Obafemi Awolowo who at a point were confined in a prison wall, yet it could not stop them from forgiving their adversaries still YOU personally consider Mandela a hero over the aforementioned names.
I think you are blindfolded with Mandemania love.
Cheers!

It's all media hype. The west is thankful because he secured their investments in south African corporations. Most westerners including the royal families were initially afraid that their investments would be appropriated under black rule in SA. Mandela did the opposite. That's is the underlying reason for celebration.

Am a YorubaDude and All Nigerian Hero has Impact on Me But Non Like Mandela !!

I cried my eyes , couldn't believed I could cry for Mandela whom I never attached any emotion until his Death and commiserations from virtually all corners of the world .....

The aspect that got me was Mandela's 27 years Imprisonment ..... A quarter of his Life was spent in Jail .... Waow,Waow .......just to free his people while an Hero left his people in Naija and fled grin

Nelson Mandela was a GreatMan and a Strength !!

The West made him a legend in order to guise their role in supporting apartheid during his incarceration.

Margret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were actively supporting Apartheid South Africa.

In summary, Mandela was re-branded and made to be the poster child for pacifist struggles.

Total Nonsense.

If you ask me these are what was most endearing about Mandela:

1. He suffered incarceration although he had no choice.

2. He embraced reconciliation although I suspect this as part of the pact behind the scenes to ensure theat what happened in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) during the Boer Wars will not be repeated.

3. He acted or rather was properly managed after living officer as a global states man.

Other than that I don't see anything really remarkable about Mandela. Mandela's greatest achievement was that he became the symbol of opposition against apartheid rule rallying all of Black Africa and also those in the diaspora.

And as I earlier stated, the western Media air brushed him in order to fade the memory of how the U.S. , UK and some other smaller EU nations like Belgium (which benefited from the diamonds trade) and Holland (which is the home nation of most white Afrikaans) were actively supporting apartheid South Africa.

The likes of Patrice Lumumba (DRC), Thomas Nyere (Tanzania) and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana were promoting a collective African course than Mandela who was only preoccupied with freeing Apartheid South Africa.

I will even stick my neck out to say the likes of FELA where more committed to Africa than Mandela.

Re: Do You Consider Nelson Mandela As An African/world Hero??? by pazienza(m): 1:07pm On Dec 21, 2013
A south Africa hero? Maybe, considering that whites are now south Africans too.. An African hero? No way, that title belongs to kwame Nkrumah, Thomas sankara,Patrice Lumumba, and even Ghadaffi.

Mandela didn't forgive the whites, for those saying he forgave them, Mandela simply had no choice, it's either he accept their terms and conditions, or rot in jail, he choose to accept their terms, i don't see anything extra ordinary about that. I think people are carried away by the 27 years imprisonment ish, but i heard he spent some of those years in what cannot be really termed a jail, and again, what's the usefulness of spending those years in jail, if you end up giving up the fight and instead ended up negotiating with the Enemy who gave him empty political power, devoid of economic hold for the black populace. Mandela is just a human who was too afraid to rot in jail and gave up his resolve after 27 years, he was not strong enough to die for his beliefs or stand in his struggle against imperialism, he ended up embracing his enemies, if only to save his life.

In the words of Nas " let the other great late veteran Live". In other words, let the dead rest in peace while we use our precious time to think abt our present and future. There is so much hunger in the land and we need brains to think with.
