Now add another 1000.=4090

Now add 10.=4100

assume u were in a job interview
ds words 'take' 'add' and 'total' do not have any connection with 5100 or 4100... wait b4 u shout na! answer ds questions sincerely: 1. is 'take away' d same as 'take'
2. is 'add to' d same as 'add'
3. is 'add' not same as 'place insequentially order or in front'
4. is 'sum' d same as 'total'

my own answer if neither 5100 nor 4100 can be in the option will be
1000401000301000201000101000

And then the interviewer tells you that you are wrong

So many people have failed interview not because it is difficult but because they complicate things themselves thinking they are smart.

Since this is mathematics, the last definition should help you, also add is synonymous to sum, you can do a research if you don't mind, infact these definitions should clear your confusion that a word doesn't mean just one thing, english isn't as simple as you think.

ADD:
pronunciation
(IPA): /æd/

verb

(transitive)To join or unite, as one thing to another, or as several particulars, so as to increase the number, augment the quantity, or enlarge the magnitude, or so as to form into one aggregate.
Hence:To sum up; to put together mentally.
to add numbers

(transitive) To combine elements of (something) into one quantity.
to add a column of numbers

(transitive) To give by way of increased possession (to any one); to bestow (on).

(transitive) To append, as a statement; to say further.

(intransitive) To make an addition. To add to, to augment; to increase.
It adds to our anxiety.
1611, King James Version, 1 Kings 12:14:
I will add to your yoke

(intransitive) mathematics To perform the arithmetical operation of addition.
He adds rapidly.

After this, you should be able to deduce that add= add to= sum, understanding the context which it is used is the key.

pls 4 me, d ans = 2010, each data z independent, nt a continous arithematic

tnks 4 ur reasonging, I appreciate ur answer. but in an interview stage, i do not tink u will be able to discuss all dse verbs, nouns adjectives etc. b4 answering d questn.
2ndly there is none line sentence indictating a 'sum total' of each 'add another'. anyway, one is not said to be confused if answers differs from ur Op, dts why humans are dynamic

I get your point but funny enough this is an interview question and the answer given didn't follow your logic at all.

Well everyone always have their answers.

haibe:

lol, I didn't even form the question, if you read through this thread from the beginning you will find out its an international question which I only edited slightly, what you think is the trick is not the trick, its only your misinterpretation. Ask those who choose 6000 as their answer what the trick is.

"Then another 1000": No intelligent student will doubt that this means add another 1000 after reading into context, infact this shouldn't be the question arising at all except you don't know what the word "another" means.
ok could you post the original riddle or indicate what part of it you editted?

Well, easiest way to do it is to add all big number first then the smaller ones. And luckily all the ans in this one are in hundreds and thousands. So your calculation becomes really simple if you have the right way to solve them.
5100 is the correct answer. Actually, my dad is a Maths Tutor and he taught me few tricks to do these sort of additions.

correct
Re: Maths Riddle by ezeemilk(m): 2:55pm On Aug 26, 2014
D correct answer is 1100...take means to minus 1000 which makes u a debtor. Wen u add 40, u r still a debtor of 960.now -960+1000 gives u +40...now u have 40+30 gives u +70..now anoda 1000 means to minus 1000 frm 70 again which gives u -930. Adding 20 gives u -910 .adding 1000 again gives u +90..+90+10, gives u100...finally, adding 1000 to 100, gives 1100....final answer

If you look all through the statements of adding 1000, e.t.c
add was specifically stated but got to another and they only said and another......dont go assuming to add that
