Sealeddeal: 'Ekeresimesi' is Igbo izugbe. 'Krisimasi' is what i have always heard and thats what we call it here in nnewi.Bros u don't know what u r saying. It's ekeresimesi. The krisimasi u r talking about is the pronunciation of the English word "Christmas" |

Afam4eva: I don't know why people are surprised that Christmas is called similarly in different languages when Christmas in itself is imported and has no roots in any African culture. So, since there were no particular words in these languages that could appropriately mean "Christmas", it's just pronounced with the intonation of whichever language. It's just as Jesus is "jesu" or "yesu" in a lot of languages. You are spot on. |

nacosprof: Emwin ukpe = new year,..keresimesi = christmas..all in Edo particularly Esan, benin really don't known abt Edo north.. In Benin, it's called "Emwin ukpo nekhere" while the new year is called "Emwin ukpo n'okhua". The Benins also celebrate their Igue festival this period as well as in the new year in some parts, that's why the Christmas period is called Emwin ukpo nekhere (Small year celebration) and the new year Emwin ukpo n'okhua (Big year celebration). "Emwin", literally means thing(s) but in this context, it means what goes on around this period which is festivity/celebration. |
