Osun Govt. Acquires N51million Land To Build Church by LMAyedun(m): 5:53pm On Jan 02, 2014 |
The state’s government’s plan to build a church somehow weakens the argument by critics of Governor Rauf Aregbesola that he was islamising the state. The Osun State government has acquired parcels of farmlands in Akakumosa West local council of the state for the construction of a church. The interdenominational worship centre, to be named ‘Open Heaven Worship Centre,’ would be sited at both Odo Iju and Ibodi communities. The state’s government’s plan to build a church somehow weakens the argument by critics of Governor Rauf Aregbesola that he was islamising the state. The state government said, Tuesday, that it had paid N51 million as compensation to farmers whose lands would be used for the church. While presenting cheques to farmers, Muyiwa Ige, the state’s Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development, said that compensation was done on humanitarian grounds and the government’s commitment to the welfare of the people. Another N11 million was paid to 243 farmers whose lands were affected by the ongoing construction of the MKO Abiola International Airport, Ido-Osun, Egbedore Local council. Mr. Ige said that the government’s acquisition of the lands was for the development of the state in order to attract foreign investors. While assuring that the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led government would not hesitate in compensating those with genuine land papers, Mr. Ige called for the people’s support in developing the state. http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/152542-osun-govt-acquires-n51million-land-build-church.html

Think this is gonna be another problem created cos the other religious groups may wake up to allege the state goverment of being bias and favoring a group. The last time Prophet (Dr) T.O Obadare was buried, he donated N35million to the ceremony just to show that he is disintrested in a religion. Now another N51million for a church site. Though in terms of gubernatorial administration, he is doing very well but Aregbesola should know that there is no way one can satisfy people of different believes and religious mentality. What he is doing is exactly what is called a misplaced priority. 2 Likes |

So much confusion in this country. On one hand, the constitution says the country is a secular one. On the other hand, state governments and FG build churches and mosques and sponsor pilgrimages. What's the business of the state in building churches or mosques? 2 Likes |

Tolexander: Think this is gonna be another problem created cos the other religious group may wake up to allege the state goverment of being bias and favoring a group. Oh yes! They should remember to build an Ifa House/Isese House and a mosque in the same council area. But doing that isn't even the issue. Governments should hands off religious issues because religion is a personal thing. |

Oloye, stay away from religious issues and concentrate on governance. People appreciate better, things they can see or enjoy. Which denomination was the church built for? Catholic, Anglican or Pentecostal churches? You see? 1 Like |

Aregbesola is a known Islamic bigot and cannot trick the Christian community in Osun. That plot of land will be abandoned or converted to something else when once he succeeds in getting the support of Christians for his second term bid 3 Likes |

Bishop Juice: For lack of anything to do with the free oil money, this ram has decided to use the meager allocation the state receives from the FG and Oil regions to build a church? You have the audacity to abuse and insult a whole region because of the action of the governor? Why are some of you shamelessly and irretrievably lost to bigotry, tribalism and utter recklessness? Why are you incapable of an intelligent discourse that's free from abuse? What kind of training (formal and informal) did you get? When Peter Obi donated millions of naira to private businesses, did you hear people abuse the whole of SE? https://www.nairaland.com/1530521/governor-obi-donates-n200m-private Has anyone here defended Aregbesola the same way Peter Obi was shielded over the unwise spend on private entities? This is a New Year. Think and change. 3 Likes |

So Christians are supposed to see this as a laudable intent or what? Be it a Christian, Muslim, or Afrel centre, the government has no business commiting a whooping 51million naira of state funds to this or another religion course. Seems like a calculated political move to appease the dwindling Aregbe popularity among the Christian community in that state. 2 Likes |

Pukkah: People deserve the leadership they have. You whole region is not interested in local and state governance but have become full time critics of the FG all because some appointments do not satisfy your tribal and religious leanings. Bishop Juice: So many things are unclear or hazy to you and I can see you're basing your wild conclusions on faulty assumptions. 1. Was the SW not the most virulent critics of Obasanjo? 2. Was Yar'Adua not a victim of acerbic criticisms? How come we didn't hear cries of 'haters' or 'tribalism' in the two administrations? 3. Which appointments are unsatisfactory to the SW? And which religious and political leanings are you talking about? Don't forget the SW is the most dynamic in terms of religious mix. 4. You didn't say anything about my earlier comment on Peter Obi's wasteful spending. https://www.nairaland.com/1530521/governor-obi-donates-n200m-private 5. You didn't say anything as to why you would abuse a whole region. 6. Set the SW against any region in the South or North and do a peer comparison to see which region has the best governors today. 3 Likes |

atlwireles: Osun CAN should come out and distance themselves from this nonsense asap. CAN should go beyond condemning this. It should also condemn the government sponsorship of religious pilgrimages. ckkris: Govt no de build church. Just allow people to worship as they choose, and don't join Christian schools with Muslim schools. Return Christian schools to Christians. Let each religion manage their own affairs. Oh yes! All the religious buildings that have been so built (e.g. Ecumenical Centre and National Mosque in Abuja) should also be returned to the government and turned to public utilities. By the way, did you guys hear about Akwa Ibom's carol of a whopping 9,999 choristers? Pukkah: Wherein the money donated was to assist the churches in running their schools and hospitals. The governor is assisting bodies that have helped the people of Anambra by providing schools and medical faccilities. Now why did you ommit that part were it was stated Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has within the last two days handed over cheques totalling N220m to churches in the state to run their schools and hospitals. How is this in any way similar to a governor building a church premises from scratch? And finally to refute all the nonsense you posted, the headline is Obi Donates 200Mmillion and NOT Anambra government 1 Like |
