Governor Martins Elechi of Ebonyi State on Friday said the only weapon available to opposition parties in the country was noise-making.

He said they adopted the style of criticising government and the ruling party with the aim of frightening the people to give the impression that they are better.

He added that despite their noise, the opposition would not get anywhere in their quest to wrest power.

Elechi spoke with State House correspondents shortly after he met President Goodluck Jonathan in his office.

“Don’t mind all the noise being made by the opposition, that is their only weapon, to frighten the people and give the impression that they are better. They are getting nowhere. So I am happy with the state of affairs and I believe we will make more progress,” he said.

On the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation, the governor said Nigeria, despite its challenges and unique features, had done well.

He said since even developed nations face challenges,  Nigerians should not expect  the country’s journey to always be a bed of roses.

The governor said the most important thing is for all citizens to have confidence in themselves and their leaders.

He said, “As a nation, we have fared well, we are so populous, so heterogeneous, ethnic diversity and religious multiplicity, is not easy to galvanise such a body into a smooth organisation, called the government or a country.

“So far, we have been passing through challenges. These challenges of development, poverty, illiteracy but if you think of where we were even 50 years ago not to talk of 100 years ago, compared that to where we are today, we have every reason to give thanks to God. We have done well, that is my honest impression.

“There are challenges ahead, even developed nations have challenges. Therefore we should not expect it to be a bed of roses always. The more we try, I think the better the result, but we must be patient and steadfast. We should have confidence in ourselves, in the leadership of the nation. It is a matter of time.

“Look at the economic indices that is being quoted, Nigeria is now surpassing South Africa in spite of all the challenges we have within and democracy is waxing.”

Elechi described recent report that he opposed the planned national conference as an organised attempt by the opposition to pitch him against the establishment.
