Igbo Leaders Reject Okurounmu National Conference Panel’s Report by nduchucks: 8:27am On Jan 07, 2014

A major crisis of confidence has hit the planned National Conference, following yesterday’s insistence of Igbo leaders on a new constitution.

Unless the Prof. Ben Nwabueze-led Igbo leaders of thought are persuaded, a credibility crisis is imminent for the conference, which is likely to begin before the end of March.

The Igbo leaders of thought, after yesterday’s meeting in Enugu, rejected the proposal of the Presidential Advisory Committee, led by Senator Femi Okuroumu, which recommended the amendment of the constitution. They are also opposed to the proposed selection of delegates on the basis of senatorial zones or federal constituencies.

The Igbo leaders, at the end of their third meeting, also gave an indication that they had initiated an action aimed at reconciling the various factions in the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, that the Igbo should not be divided at the conference, they said.

The meeting was attended by prominent Igbo elders, including, Senator Anyim Ude, President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief Enwo Igariwey, Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Offia Nwali, Dr Chu Okongwu, Chief Ben Obumselu, Dr Dozie Ikedife, Mrs Maria Okwor, Chief Enechi Onyia (SAN), Mr. Chris Okoye, Elliot Uko and Igwe Aja Nwachukwu, among others.

The secretary of the group and former Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Prof Elochukwu Amucheazi, told reporters that the Igbo position on the conference would be made public by the end of this month.

He said they were totally opposed to any recommendation that would have anything to do with the retention of any aspect of the 1999 Constitution. Only a new constitution would be acceptable to Nigerians, he said.

Amucheazi said the position of the Igbo leaders is that the conference should be for all ethnic nationalities, being the only way the people would be carried along in the process.

“The advisory council seems to be thinking of the amendment of the constitution and we met to see how to inform the president that this is not in order because we are thinking of an entirely new constitution. What we are saying is that we must have a way of informing the president and Nigerians that the recommendation is not in order and in trying to do this, you can see this is the meeting of Concerned Igbo Leaders of Thought and we are bringing in Ohanaeze to have a reconciliation in two weeks time because we want Ndigbo to be united in this.

“We want this country to survive and we are doing all in our power to make it survive. We are working out the content of the constitution and when we are through with it, we are going to invite all Igbo groups to have a say on it.

“In other words, Ndigbo have rejected the recommendation of PAC. If this is a conference of all nationalities, all ethnic nationalities should be represented. What we are saying is that if we are using the geo-political zones, we must make sure that all ethnic units are represented.

“Again, it is not delegates through adult suffrage by individuals on their own merit but that the ethnic nationalities will have a way of nominating people to it. So we are dealing with nationalities and this is an issue that seem to be misunderstood. We want ethnic nationalities and not senatorial zones,” he said.

The Igbo leaders also demanded that the new constitution should not pass through the National Assembly but should be subjected to a referendum.

The leadership crisis rocking Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Amucheazi said, will be sorted out at their next meeting on January 18.

I suppose these leaders are just now understanding why many believe that this National Conference is not a "Sovereign" National Conference. NASS must rubberstamp its outcome for any of its recommendation to become law. This so-called National Conference can only recommend items for inclusion in the ongoing constitutional amendment process. Period. Its a toothless and useless conference.

Who will dissolve NASS and make this conference, sovereign? We know with 100% certainty that it will not be our current President.

Who told you Igbos don't know the conference is a charade. Just that the current Igbo political office holders don't want to offend their oga at the top. Here in Port Harcourt, most Igbos I speak to are very different from with the way they see politics compare with their NL counterparts.

If you think that the presidency will come out and declare that we must conduct sovereign national conference, then am sorry for you. The president took an oath to preserve the sovereignity of Nigeria. It is only the people that will press for either total overall of the 1999 constitution or sovereign national conference. Ndi Igbo have taken a decisive step, I hope other ethnic nationalities do the same.

Dahomey Amazon: Tinubu is about to be vindicated by ibos.

I remember how badly Tinubu was bashed following his comments

How come we see with zoom lenses while they are myopic?

How come its takes them months and years to comprehend?

Isn't it easy to see why we are light years ahead?

If you want to do this properly, start with the NASS giving the conference a constitutional backing

Next you have a website where Nigerians can contribute while the consultations go on

Then you subject the resolutions to a referendum

Anything outside that is a charade

Thanks Tinubu

when we were telling them before now, they said yorubas are afraid of disintegration, that is the reason why we did not want to support the National time wasting Discussion. So, they are just realising what we were saying now. A man with foresight, sees miles ahead.

If the constitutional is not amended to accommodate referendum and Sovereign national Conference, we are just going to waste our time and national resources at the jamboree.

The world can see the sincerity of Igbo man, by insisting all ethnic groups be represented, Ndiigbo is giving small groups like Ogoni, Andoni and their likes, the opportunity to be at the conference on equal level as everyone else, and not get swallowed up by bigger groups like Ijaw or Ikwerre, whom they might be sharing same senatorial or federal constituency with. This move will also favour our brothers in Northern parts of Cross river, where we have different and many small ethnic groups.

sincerity indeed!!!!!

or you are afraid that the hausas will outnumber you again and impose their wills on you.

Nigeria is a jungle with the 1st rule of the jungle at play -- self preservation first. You are fighting to wilt down the numerical strength of the hausas. It is not about giving representation to other minority ethnic groups.

We are too smart to see through your folly.

Stop be petty & myopic, Igbos are not the only ones clamouring for ethnic representation and nothing else.

Your fears about Ijaw swallowing up other ethnic groups in ND are unfounded & mischievious. It only magnifies & portray the Igbos' desire to swallow up other groups in the SS by shouting EASTERN REGION on our ears.

Look at the way you posture your comment as if Igbos are the freedom fighters of other people, My friend! PACK WELL and take ur hypocrisy to Igboland.

When yorubas take a giant step towards the future, the igbos tend to reason like snails and worse of all move in the opposite direction. When the yorubas start reaping the fruit of their gigantic step, the igbos now realise how myopic they've been by toeing thesame direction but their snailish attitude never allow them catch up.

Samething is taking place with APC...The igbos are still clinging to the sinking PDP ship and worse of all their life-jacket is APGA, a one state party.

We, Yorubas are the master of politics in Nigeria and we are teaching Igbos the intricacies of politics. When Tinubu (un-official Yoruba leader) and other APC governors including Adams Oshiomolo rejected the so called National Conference Committee, Ohaneze and other Igbo groups and Jonathan ass-lickers called APC governors different printable and unprintable names, now the chicken has come to roast. grin grin grin

I must say I agree with this one but the constitution should be amended while another committee be setup to draft a new one before we finally dump the amended one.

On the issue of including all ethnic nationals, I do agree also. We want an "Ethnic National Conference" whereby every ethnic group will feel among and be carried along in the affairs of this country for the sake of equity and fairness.

Furthermore, if we call for an SNC(Sovereign National Conference), it practically means that all political office holders will resign and then the conference begins. On that way, the affairs and runnings of this country will be sidelined.

I think I stick to this writeup....I totally agree.

For those of you attacking other posters' comment, I really think it is uncalled for. Give yours and let others have a say....this country is not owned by any ethnic group...we all have contributed our own various quotas to the development of this nation and so we must have our own say in the affairs of the country.

Most Nigerians are against the modus operandi of the proposed conference and it did not originate from Tinubu. Its just that some paid lapdogs are on Nairaland giving wrong impression of Igbos like we are an isolated group that know nothing about the world. The bad part is that most non-Igbos take their views as that of the real Igbos on the streets.

in the present condition, it will be wrong to call for a 'sovereign' conference. On what document/legitimacy will the President and NASS stand in convoking the conference? I thought these are elected officials whom people have delegated their sovereignty to? Except there's a revolution overthrowing the present order, I don't think we can make a constitution outside the NASS.

Again it should not be based on ethnicity. Which ethnic nationalities are we talking about? How many ethnicities are in Nigeria? If all attend won't it be recipe for chaos?

Let our elders accept things as they are and go to the conference on a unified agenda, hopefully they will score some points with SW and SS. At least the Yoruba will equally be voting for decentralisation of power- the only issue is how to scale the NW and NE who have created more LGs and constituencies for themselves.

If much is not achieved as desired by the south, the only option will be forceful change or hope for oil impact in the economy to diminish for freedom to come. When will that be? Two years, three years? Not sure...
