Just as i do not pretend to know the technicalities involved in the conversion of cars from right hand to left hand, it may be that the lady was unlucky to have patronized a wrong technician. I know of an man at Volvo line in Ladipo in the compound where i service my wife's Volvo 940. This guy is so good (so I believe) because anytime i visited the place i used to see up to 5-6 Peugeot 406 being worked on or just being brought in. And i remember asking my mechanic on one occasion how good the guy was, he confirmed that he is so good that he could not count how many 406 he converts in a month. I also remember in 1973 (i was in class 3 in the high school) when we changed to left hand drive my in law who specialized in Volkswagen products in Agodi Gate Ibadan changed many tokunbo VW products brought in by many University of Ibadan Lecturers that brought their cars in from the countries where they studied and i do not think they ever came back with any problems. But we may argue that vehicles were not this high tech then. |

Siena, thanks for bringing up this topic. Please, how does a novice who wants to buy a tokunbo or used car in Naija spot a converted car because i heard that some conversions looks so smooth that you hardly find out till when it starts developing problems on the course of your driving them? |

saxywale: The lady should have driven the car straight to Mercedes when it touched the shores of Nigeria, she was probably trying to save some pennies. A close relation of mine got a Renault from UK to Nigeria. Ladipo mechanics offered to convert it to LHD for 150k and it takes about 3days. He went to CFAO, the sole distributor of Renault in Nigeria. They charged 300k and it took them a month to convert the car cos they had to order some components from France and the job was very technical. He paid the price but at least he can drive the car around with peace of mind. The car has been used for over two month now and no complaint yet. Mercedes-Benz would not convert a car from RHD to LHD. I had a telephone conversation with them at the time, it's just something they wouldn't entertain. I'm not sure how CFAO came to convedrt a car. Dealerships operate under very tight constraints, they are under license. If they contravene the terms of their license / contract, their dealership rights could be revoked. It's not just in Nigeria, it's everywhere. Another issue here - I can't understand how CFAO managed to convert a Renault for 300,000 NGN including new parts, which were shipped from France! Let's even assume the parts were used, the freight costs would be closer to the 200k mark. It makes one wonder what their labour rates are - 2 Naira per hour? 1 Like |

princey83: German cars are LHD for the Domestic market, and when destined for countries that drive on the RIGHT. NOT when destined for the UK, Australia, India, Uganda, Japan or any country that drives on the LEFT. |

pato405: @obojo: you just escalated my confusion. while some people believe that German and other European cars are easiest to convert, your opinion holds the contrary (Japanese products). My question: which is actually easier/easiest to convert if one must take this risk? From a cost-effective or technical point, and in the interest of neatness, integrity and achieving a factory conversion, late model German or other Euro cars are easiest to convert. This is because from circa 2001, most Euro models don't have RHD or LHD bodyshells anymore. There's just a global shell, which will accept components for RHD or LHD. No cutting holes, no drilling, no welding involved. The reason for a Global set-up is clear - there is no longer the need for two different production lines. In the previous method, all bodyshells were on one production line, up to a stage. Then they diverged to a different line, depending if the car was destined to be RHD or LHD. Japanese models tend to be engineered for a specific set-up - RHD or LHD. Not both. This makes a conversion to factory standard that much harder to achieve. The bulkhead is different, so drilling, cutting, welding, panel beating etc is required. This is why I don't do Japanese cars. I can do them, but it wouldn't be cost effective from me, as I would replace the entire RHD bulkhead with a LHD one. Not cut, drill, weld, panel beat the existing RHD one to accept LHD parts. 2 Likes |

We specialise in car conversion parts and LHD vehicles in UK I recently visited Nigeria and tested a Lexus IS 200 that was converted for a friend on mine 3 years ago. I noticed that the cosmetics are still intact but the steering rack is faulty and stiff. Car conversion has been common practice in the whole of the West African region for over a decade now which invariably can be argued is here to stay but how safe is the practice? The cheaper the conversion the better for consumer, which unfortunately may not be the case for safety, so how are mechanics able to keep the cost down? Are consumers entitled to know what they are paying for in terms of the parts and process? Given all the information relating to car conversion will consumers still opt for it or the original left hand cars? Could decisions be due to literacy or economic condition?
