Not a lot up!

I was in Port Harcourt in May and then in July went to Lagos and Ibadan.

Still just playing chess on Gameknot and Chess.com

Its quite fun but NOTHING compares to over the board, face to face, real chess!

Re: Nairaland Official Chess Thread! by tushbobo(m): 11:02pm On Aug 09, 2015
This was a position I had during an offhand blitz game.
The timing was 3 minutes with 0 seconds increment.
I was lucky to find a mate in three.

So I think it fits a puzzle.
Mate in 3.White to Move.

No. Black will just capture the bishop on d4,defend with rook or push the g7 pawn.the 3 moves to mate are all forced. ie they are checks.

A lil' trivia:

The bishop pair, aligned such as on d3 and d4 in this position, is sometimes known as Harrwitz bishops, a nice formation to get to effectively attack the kingside castled positions. The dark squared B sweeps across the long a1-h8 diagonal, while the light squared B sweeps across the b1-h7 diagonal... occasionally, you could transfer the light squared dude up to the a2-g8 diagonal if need be, depending on the position.

The power of this bishop pair enabled the Q sac to work... Qxh6+ crowns this game. If you guys can refer to the first video I posted on this thread about a K-squared match (Kasparov-Karpov, 1990, game 20) you'll see Kaspy doing almost exactly this type of game with the two bishops, doing major damage. You'll also witness him calculating like a crazy machine in the video.

I played a nice blitz game on chess.com, 5 minutes, plus 2 secs.
I had the black pieces. Just wanna share some tips, and a puzzle at the end.

1.d4 Nf6 2.e3 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.Be2 Bb7
I was preparing to play on the light
squares in the centre, Nimzo-Indian/Queen's Indian style,
since my opponent controlled the dark
squares with his pawns (like all these d4
'system' players: Colle/Torre/London
Systems). Don't worry, guys, the opening
names ain't that important too much, its
the strategies behind'em that are. 5.a3 Be7
6.0-0 Nc6 7.h3 Ne4 8.Nbd2 f5

consistent with the light square strategy
9.Nxe4 fxe4 10.Nd2 d5 11.c4 Na5
12.b4 Nxc4 13.Bxc4
already a small
mistake. I control the light squares. You
now won't wanna throw away your light
squared bishop and leave my own behind
dancing around these squares! Nxc4 was
prolly berra. Plus, White 'dashes' a playa
like me the bishop pair (lolz don’t mind me, guys, I still have my fish moments)
[ 13.Nxc4 dxc4 14.Bxc4 now, see my
weak chopable pawns on e4 and e6 ]
13...dxc4 14.Nxc4 0-0 15.Ne5 Bd6
16.Qh5 Qe7 17.Bb2 Ba6 18.Rfe1 Rf5
19.Qg4 Raf8 20.f3 exf3 21.Nxf3 R8f6

preparing to attack the queen 22.Rac1?
Rxf3!
assignment: figure out why I took
the knight. 23.Qe4 Rf2 24.Ba1 Rd2
preparing to play 25…Rff2, dominating the
entire second rank. And now… 25.Bc3 (diagram)

So this is the puzzle, try to visualise these moves in your head. I played 25…Bd3 26.Qa8+ Rf8 27.Qxa7??

Find the winning line from here.

Is anyone on chess time here (for android)?
Re: Nairaland Official Chess Thread! by EddyNumerouno(m): 2:09pm On Aug 13, 2015
I just started playing chess (can't believe I once thought it was a game for dull people. Now I don't even see the chess pieces; I see armies and conquests.

Is there a chess club in Owerri, or does anyone in owerri fancy helping a prospective GM hone his skills?

Wow, that was quick.

Correct! The game ended with the first line (Harrwitz bishops yet again: on e4 and d6.)

In your second variation, 27... Rxg2+ 28.Kh1, more forcing is ...Rh2+ 29. Kg1 Qg5#

I'll make the lines longer/deeper with more variations next time smiley
