Go to Spain, all the Muslim mosques have become churches and you can barely find Muslims there. Spain was Muslim at some point.

Yet there are significant amounts of minorities in the Arab world. Syria, Lebanon, Jordan etc.. If the Muslim governments have forcibly coverted people, in a few generations, there will be no other faith.

Iran was Sunni as at the 15th Century but when the Safavid empire took over, they cracked down and expelled Sunni Scholarship, today Sunnis are a small minority.

If an empire wants to force people to a faith, it is not difficult. Generally, this was not the case with Muslims. It only takes a few generations.
It is just amazing how the early Muslims were able to achieve such great feat without recourse to forcefully convert people. I can only compare what the Safavid Shi'a did in Iran to what the Catholics did in Spain, it was complete hatred and annihilation of their enemies (Muslims).

I came across another interesting quote in an article:

"Michael Penn, a professor of early Christian-Muslim relations at Mount Holyoke College, is a student of early Syriac manuscripts. He came across letters written by Christians who were hostile to Islam, but he also found a document written by a Christian bishop in the middle of the seventh century that says, “Arabs aren’t opposed to Christianity, they respect our religion, honor priests and holy men. We have records of Muslim rulers helping found Christian monasteries.” Professor Penn also found an extended prayer by a Christian on behalf of a Muslim ruler. The highlight of his research, however, was a seventh-century canon law permitting Christian priests to administer last rites to Muslims as well as perform exorcisms to heal Muslims using Christian relics."

The examples were set from the start... When Umar Ibn Khattab entered Jerusalem, This was part of his statement.

"In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. This is the assurance of safety which the servant of God, Umar, the Commander of the Faithful, has given to the people of Jerusalem. He has given them an assurance of safety for themselves for their property, their churches, their crosses, the sick and healthy of the city and for all the rituals which belong to their religion. Their churches will not be inhabited by Muslims and will not be destroyed. Neither they, nor the land on which they stand, nor their cross, nor their property will be damaged. "

It is these examples that guided most of our behavior towards non-muslims.

When the Muslims had taken some parts of the Sassanid Empire, Ishoyabh III, the Nestorian Patriarch of Khurasan, stated in a letter to Simeon, the Prelate of Persia, that:

"...and the Arabs, to whom God at this time has given the empire of the world, behold, they are among you, as ye know well: and yet they attack not the Christian faith, but, on the contrary, they favour our religion, do honour to our priests and the saints of the Lord, and confer benefits on churches and monasteries." (Ishoyabh III quoted by T. W. Arnold, Preaching of Islam, London, 1913, p. 81-82)

The ruin of the empire of the Romans, and, along with it the subversion of all law and order, which happened a few centuries afterwards, produced the entire neglect of that study of the connecting principles of nature, to which leisure and security can alone give occasion. After the fall of those great conquerors and the civilizers of mankind, the empire of the Caliphs seems to have been the first state under which the world enjoyed that degree of tranquility which the cultivation of the sciences requires. It was under the protection of those generous and magnificent princes, that the ancient philosophy and astronomy of the Greeks were restored and established in the East; that tranquility, which their mild, just and religious government diffused over their vast empire, revived the curiosity of mankind, to inquire into the connecting principles of nature. (Adam Smith, The Essays of Adam Smith, London, 1869, p. 353

"The victorious arms of the Saracens carried into Spain the learning as well as the gallantry, of the East; and along with it, the tables of Almamon, and the Arabian translations of Ptolemy and Aristotle; and thus Europe received a second time, from Babylon, the rudiments of the sciences of the heavens. The writings of Ptolemy were translated from Arabic into Latin; and the Peripatetic philosophy was studied in Averroes [Ibn Rushd] and Avicenna [Ibn Sina] with as much eagerness and as much submission to its doctrines in the West, as it had been in the East." (Adam Smith, The Essays of Adam Smith, London, 1869, p. 353)

When Amr bin al-‘Aas entered Egypt:

That the early government of ‘Amr was animated by a spirit of justice and even sympathy for the subject population, can hardly be questioned.(Alfred J. Butler, The Arab Conquest of Egypt and the Last Thirty Years of the Roman Dominion, 1902, Oxford, p. 456.)

‘The rapid success of the Arab invaders was largely due to the welcome they received from the native Christians, who hated the Byzantine rule not only for its oppressive administration, but also – and chiefly – on account of the bitterness of theological rancour...to the Copts, as the Jacobite Christians of Egypt are called, the Muhammadan conquest brought a freedom of religious life such as they had not enjoyed for a century.’ (Arnold, Preaching, p. 102.)

but it is not every victorious general whose conscience would be troubled by such a protest. Of ‘Amr, however, it is recorded that he was struck with remorse, and exclaimed: “Would that I had encountered the Romans as soon as they issued forth from Alexandria!” What is more, he at once ordered full compensation to be paid to the Copts for all their losses. This frank admission of responsibility and frank restitution prove at once the excellence of ‘Amr’s principles of government and the nobility of his nature. (Butler, Conquest, p. 488)

When the muslims entered spain:

"Thus, when Muslims crossed the straits of Gibraltar from North Africa in 711 CE and invaded the Iberian Peninsula, Jews welcomed them as liberators from Christian Persecution."

Zion Zohar, Sephardic & Mizrahi Jewry, New York, 2005, p. 8-9.

"It was in these favourable circumstances that the Spanish Jews came under the rule of Mahometans (Muslims), as whose allies they esteemed themselves the equals of their co-religionists in Babylonia and Persia. They were kindly treated, obtained religious liberty, of which they had so long been deprived, were permitted to exercise jurisdiction over their co-religionists, and were only obliged, like the conquered Christians, to pay poll tax (Dsimma)’... H. Graetz, History of the Jews, London, 1892, v 3, p. 112

Jewish Spain became “the place of civilization and of spiritual activity- a garden of fragrant, joyous, and happy poetry, as well as the seat of earnest research and clear thought.” Like the Arabian Christians (the Christians who lived amongst the Mahometans) the Jews made themselves acquainted with the language and literature of their conquerors, and often got precedence over them. But whilst Arabian Christians gave up their own individuality, forgot their own language- Gothic Latin- and could not even read the creeds, and were ashamed of Christianity, the Jews of Spain were so little affected through this contact with Arabs, that it only served to increase their love and enthusiasm for their mother tongue, their holy law, and their religion. Through favourable circumstances Jewish Spain was in a position at first to rival Babylonia, then to supersede it, and finally to maintain its superiority for nearly five hundred years. H. Graetz, History of the Jews, London, 1892, v 3, p. 220

# Why do you like to use Christianity cases to justify some of the Muslim's extremism?!

# Since you guys have understood this discussion to be another "Sunni-Shia" stuff, I will have to correct or remind you that both Schools are guilty as per forcing their ways into the throat of others. There is no point running away from this known fact.

# I say NO to any form of compulsion in religion. Quran make this clear and nothing abrogated that ruling.

I cannot help but state that indeed the verse of the Qur'an which declared Muslims to be the best of people for mankind is indeed the truth. The drive was to establish a just and fair atmosphere for people to flourish, commanding the good and forbidding the bad according to the Qur'an and Sunnah.

It is a fact that people embraced Islam voluntarily and adopted the Arab culture without hassle, even far to lands never conquered by the Muslim Army. It was indeed a powerful movement that is astonishing.

There were never any muslim armies in Malaysia and Indonesia. Conversion was organic through contact with muslims.

Well said. They are using other nation, religion conquest to justify the early Muslims actions.

The early Muslim invaded people's land and give them conditions either they accept Islam or pay tax, they even took women as booty and slaves, changed their language and culture(agreed by all historian). What kind of "Peace" and "mercy" is that?

All these were done out greed and savagery.

Lol let me tell how these early religious people acted savagery and greedy, the Muslim ruler(caliph) ruled in Spain and gave freedom in exchange of paying tax(jizya), later on the catholic church had to wage a crusade on the caliphate in Spain, forced people(the moors) back to chritsianity(reconquest). grin

Greediness ehn!

Imam was struggling to prepare his Friday sermon and didn't want to be disturbed by his five year old daughter, so he removed a map of the world from his study, tore it into pieces and gave it to her to assemble with the promise that he would answer all her questions and play with her when she was done. He knew she would never be able to fix it.

To his amazement, in less than five minutes, she returned to him in his study with the map in perfect shape, every continent and every country in its place. The surprised father asked, ''Honey, you don't know anything about geography, so how did you fix the world so easily and quickly? The five year old girl smiled sweetly and replied, ''The picture of of THE HOLY QU'R' AN and the inscription LA ILLAHA ILLALLAHA MUHAMMADU ROSULULLAH was at back of the map and I knew that if ALLAH, His MESSENGER and QUR'AN are put in the right place, the whole world would be in perfect shape'.

That was just the right inspiration he needed for his sermon. He thanked his daughter and prepared a powerful sermon on the subject: "Fix Your World By Placing ALLAH, His MESSENGER and the QUR'AN in the Right Place in your heart ".

To whoever is reading this message, just place ALLAH, His MESSENGER and QUR'AN in the rightful place and your life will be in order. I hope you understand this just like I do.

SUFISM (TASAWWUF): AS DEFINED BY SHAYKH ADAM ABDULLAH AL-ILORY

In his book: Athar al-'ilm wal-Falsafat wa t-Tasawwuf fi Masirat d-Da'wat al-Islamiyyah (1991)

1. Tasawwuf (Sufism) is a Belief and Duty. It is also a Devotion and Adoration. Tasawwuf is a Worship and Service. Thus, every Muslim is a Sufi.

2. Tasawwuf (Sufism) is a Research and Seeking for knowledge about Realities (Haqiqah). Thus, every seeker for reality is a Sufi.

3. Tasawwuf (Sufism) is Preaching and Guidance. Every preacher and guide is thus a Sufi.

4. Tasawwuf (Sufism) is showing indifference to what people possess, while desiring Allah's favour (i.e. Asceticism). Every Ascetic (Zahid) is Sufi...

To sum it up;

5. Tasawwuf (Sufism) is Purification of the Soul (Tazkiyat an-Nafs) and inculcating Good Behaviour and Virtue in such a way wild animals are tamed.
