Stay Off South-west, OPC Warns Boko Haram by Yoritshekiri: 4:07pm On Jul 05, 2014
The Oodua Peoples Congress has warned members of the violent Boko Haram sect to stay off the South-West. The OPC said any attempt by members of the terrorist sect to extend their violent campaign to the South-West would be resisted. The Founder, Dr.
Fredrick Fasehun, told Saturday PUNCH in an interview during the week that OPC would repel attempts by the terrorists to infiltrate the region. When asked what exact step OPC would take if the violent sect eventually infiltrate the region, Fasehun said in a sentence, “We shall cross the bridge when we get there.” Asked to be specific, he said the measure was not meant for public knowledge. The National Coordinator of OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, who condemned the twin explosions that occurred on June 25, 2014 in Apapa area of Lagos State, said the group was battle ready to confront and subdue any likely attack on the South-West. He said the likely extension of the Boko Haram attack to the South-West would spell doom for the country’s unity.
Adams said that OPC, which was formed to protect the interests of Yoruba people worldwide, has 65,000 of its members employed as guards tosecure some streets in the Federal Capital Territory in collaboration with the police. Recalling that security agencies were frustrating the group when it was trying to reduce armed robbery in the past in some states in the South-West, he urged traditional
rulers, transporters and traders to always volunteer information on suspicious persons around them. The Boko Haram sect insurgents, which began its violent campaign against the Nigerian state in 2009, has killed thousands of people as well as destroyed property worth several billions of naira.
The terrorist group was responsible for the
abduction of over 200 Nigerian girls in their school on the night of April 14, 2014. The sect, which had threatened to sell the girls, is yet to release them over two and half months after their abduction. A recent report indicated that about six million people were directly affected by the Boko Haram’s onslaught. The June 25 explosion in Apapa was said to have been perpetrated by a female suicidemember of the terrorist sect.
