‎Pupils Wear Religious Regalia To School In Osun Sing Different Religious Songs by idumuose(m): 7:06pm On Jul 05, 2014
There was confusion at Baptist High School, Iwo, Osun State on Tuesday as some pupils shunned their uniforms and wore choir gowns, white garments, Islamic apparel   and other unconventional dresses to the school.

Although no group or individual could be identified as the mastermind of the bizarre dress code by the pupils, there were, however, conflicting reasons for the behaviour.

While some people said the unconventional dresses were a way of registering dislike for the same uniform introduced by the government for all schools in the state,  others said some Christians who were opposed to wearing of hijab in schools founded by Christian missionaries orchestrated the drama.

The suit instituted on the issue of hijab wearing to school is still pending before an Osun State High Court.

But Tuesday confusion reportedly became more pronounced at the assembly ground as the pupils could not listen to their teachers because they were busy lining up themselves along religious lines.

A female pupil, who was dressed in a purple gown usually worn by the choir in the Baptist church, was said to have led Christian students in gospel praises, while her Muslim counterpart dressed in hijab was seen hollering “Allau Akbar†and singing praises to Allah from the same platform simultaneously.

It was learnt that although many other pupils appeared in the government-approved uniform, a few ones who are neither Christians nor Muslims wore clothes with the insignia of their religious beliefs,  making the atmosphere in the school chaotic.

The confusion was said to have continued in the classrooms as pupils sang discordant tunes. The confusion, it was gathered, started on Monday and continued on Tuesday morning.

The teachers were said to be helpless in controlling the pupils due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The Principal of the school, identified simply as Mr. Arowolo, told PUNCH Metro that that the issue had been reported  to the appropriate authorities for action.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, said the government had been informed of the development and had sent officials of the Ministry of Education to the school on a fact-finding mission.

The Christian Association of Nigeria in the state had protested against the wearing of hijab to schools founded by Christians, describing it as an attempt  to wipe away the heritage bequeathed to  them by the early missionaries.

But the Joint Muslim Action Forum, which is an umbrella body of all Islamic groups in the state, issued a statement, condemning the protest.

The statement was issued by the JOMAF Coordinator, Alhaji Kola Uzamat and Secretary, Mr. Qaasim Odedeji.

The group described the prevention of hijab-wearing students from Christian schools as an act of religious intolerance which would not be allowed in the state.

The group accused Christians of attempting to sabotage Governor Rauf Aregbesola's policy which it said was introduced to address the decay in the education sector in the state.

how would a Governor cause such a horrific chaos! He has failed in his pivotal duty to keep every inhabitant of Osun state united! This alone is enough to initiate an impeachment process against him !

And who the hell told you that the matter has been settled? This matter as far as i am concerned will be settled on election day in Osun.

Incase you were not on earth when it was settled, read this.

The Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni
Rauf Aregbesola yesterday said that his government
neither approved nor disapproved the use of hijab in
any school.
The governor while making his remarks at the peace
meeting between the Muslim Community and
Christian Community at the Baptist High School in
Iwo and the distribution and assessment of the
performance of Opon Imo, noted that it was the
court’s position that the status quo ante be
maintained until the case was determined.
Aregbesola on rule of law
Aregbesola stressed that his government being a
product of rule of law was guided in all its actions in
strict adherence to the principles of the rule of law in
the state.
According to the governor, “we are a product of the
rule of law and this has guided all our actions. As we
have said in the past, we have not approved the use
of hijab in any school. Let me repeat this again for
the hearing of mischief-makers who have been
working tirelessly to bring religious war to our state.
“Those prompting chaos and conflagration in our
state; those who have well established antecedent of
violent behaviour; those sowing the seed of discord
in our schools and community and inciting one
religion against another, as we have said in the past,
government did not at any time approve the use of
hijab in any school, before the matter went to court.
It is the court’s position that the status quo ante be
maintained until the case is determined.”
He pointed out that government had set up a
committee on discipline in public schools and when
the report is released, government would enforce
discipline in all schools.
His words: “Yoruba people have a tradition of
accommodation and inclusion; that is why our
families are interwoven around all religions.
“Some people, goaded from hell, however, are
working to break our bond of unity by beating the
drum of religious war. They will fail and only they and
their families will dance to that evil beat.”
Deputy governor sues for peace
The deputy governor, Iyaafin Grace Titilayo-Tomori
who doubles as the Commissioner for Education
speaking earlier held that peace is a necessary
catalyst of learning.
She said: “Peace must be a permanent feature not
only in our schools but every facets of the state. So,
where there is pocket of disturbances, government
will respond swiftly in restoring peace and order. This
is what has been demonstrated at the peace meeting
held at Baptist High school premises.”
Earlier, representatives of the three religions,
Christianity, Islam and traditionalists, lamented that
things that were ordinarily unconnected with
learning and knowledge had now been constituting
impediments to students’ progress in their studies.
They stated that none of them supported the
unconventional ways students had been dressing to
school.
Two students of the school, Aremu Olukayode and
Bashir Mutiyat who spoke on behalf of the students,
thanked the government for the various educational
projects such as Opon Imo, new schools and furniture
and recruitment of new teachers.
Old students disapprove Hijab use
Meantime, the Old Students Association of Baptist
High School, Iwo, has kicked against the use of hijab
by female Muslim students of the school.
President of the association, Professor Oyesoji Aremu
who spoke with newsmen in Iwo, yesterday after an
emergency meeting said the use of hijab by female
students of the school would destroy the good
legacies of the school.
He noted that the school, which was founded by the
missionaries, has great legacies which could be
tampered with if female students were allowed to
use hijab.

Can you people imagine AREGBESOLA changed the name of the state from 'Osun State' to 'The State of Osun' which is at variance with the
provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.' the Nigerian Coat of Arms has been removed from government offices and replaced with the Coat of Arms of 'The State of Osun.' BILLIONS OF NAIRA PROJECT when the masses are suffering, pensioniers are denied their right

The State anthem has equally replaced the Nigerian National Anthem at schools, state public functions and at the opening and closing of transmission of the State radio and television stations.

The governor also deploys members of Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) and O'CLEAN Corps as State Police.'

He declared Hijra as a public holiday for the Muslims.

He promoted Ifa worship as well

I am at cross road if this guy will not do worst if re-elected. Ogbeni Babatunde Raaji Fashola woeful 2nd Term performance comes to mind.

I appeal to the good people of Osun to Vote out this Ogberan of a person and let peace return to OSUN STATE.

Osun aa daa raa ooooo

What is the benefit of Airport in Osun state when the nearest airport in Ibadan about 45 minutes’ drive to Osogbo the state capital is grossly under-utilized

This is a misplaced priority and we must stop such wasteful and insensitive project that has no economics benefit to the good people of Osun.

Aregbe Bin ladin is making frantic efforts at the 11th hour to amend his evil ways.
I can assure you that it's an effort in futility.Did he just realize that he has been owing teachers' salaries for months now and started paying them?

Aregbe ole will never be a governor in his life time again.come to think of it,how come he abandoned his purported HND degree and declared his WAEC

To inec? This man would have performed had he been appointed the chairman NURTW(national union of road transport workers) oshogbo chapter

Can you remind us how long ASUP have been on strike?

Instead of bothering on issues like calling on the FG to resolve problems that affect you and make your life , here you are popnosing into other people's affair.

Who the people of Osun choose to be their governor shouldn't be your business, demanding for good governance from your retarded president should. Tell the morron of a president that our brothers and sisters in the polytechnics have stayed too long at home and need to go back to school.
Stay out of Osun state business! angry

@Baba Idumuose, how far! Why are you posting an old news just to discredit Aregbesola? You should instead promote the good works of Omisore (not how to eat corn with two hands ooo) or any other contestant for the elections. If the people of Osun state should not vote for Aregbe, you should tell them why they should vote for Omisore or any other.

ASUP strike is the work of the enemies of progress of Nigeria state.

You well know that it is a national strike with many players and actors. But Osun. strike is solely state affairs and should not be expected to drag this far if Aregbe is indeed progressive as claimed.
