An attempt to unseat the present leadership of Onitsha Drug Market, known as Onitsha Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers Union, OPPMDU, located along Onitsha/Asaba Expressway hit the rocks on Friday, causing trouble in the market.

DailyPost learnt that some traders led by an aspirant to the position of the chairman of the central market was responsible for the failed ‘coup’.

According to a market source, trouble started when a group of traders, who were among the members of the Evangelism Committee, started protesting the near impeachment of their chairman. The source said that the incident, which generated a lot of tension among the groups, however, degenerated and the meeting came to an abrupt end with members engaging in a free for all.

The market chairman, Hon. Nwosu Ugochukwu while reacting to the plan to remove him stated that the attempt to unseat him was masterminded by some disgruntled elements in the market, and that the attempt bomeranged with traders revolting against them.

Ugochukwu was appointed a chairman of caretaker committee by the Anambra State Government pending the time an election would be conducted in the market.

He added that the allegation that five persons were injured in the ensuing fracas was false as nobody sustained any form of injury in the purported fracas.
