Lol. Like Dave pointed out, your moniker is a contradition to your comment above. PiperAlpha was an offshore platform in Aberdeen Scotland where d worst oil rig disaster in history occurred, I think sometime in d fall of '89. I recall researching on it during oil pollution nd control class in my futo days.

Nice inputs all. @ocman, excellent nd articulate summary you put up there. That line 'one more night' got me thinking. Its an in-house joke I thought were only exclusive with folks I do shifts with. Nice to know we're not alone.

Nah..Oh, is it because my location reads Gulf of Mexico? Oops, my bad!! I really wish to try life offshore

Your name sells you out, but why choose a moniker that is associated with disaster? tongue

upengineer: well,
I work on a FPSO in Gulf of Guinea. I am in operations. Ironically, I got the job through an advert I responded to here on Nairaland. Its been three years now flying "chopper" and I have never had any regret whatsoever. The environment is challenging and interesting. Sights of sharks and Dolphins is normal then migratory birds also visit once its their time to migrate. Weather is a low side of offshore particularly when you have dressed up ready to go home after staying away from home for 14days only to be told chopper wont come because of bad weather and you will have to put on your coverall again back to work. Its fun and interesting. Food is also another negative side. You have to wakeup and eat as early as 6:30am. If you are not use to eating early then there will be a problem. In all, no regret working offshore!

You don't have to be an engineer to work offshore. We have more tradesmen/technicians working offshore than engineers.

Working offshore is more of an art which is developed through experience rather than knowledge..
When both experience and knowledge are merged in the best manner, you can definitely master the techniques...

Well, I worked with SPDC(as a contract staff) for 5years and 4months, I worked in 9 swamp locations and 2 deep sea offshore platforms before my contract ended and I went solo. To be honest I miss that job, the only down side is the lack of job security, but it was fun. Soku gas plant and Gbaran Ubie where the two best locations to work in as at then.
But now, there's nothing better than being your own boss, I even have a part-time lecturing job now. Though the pay may not be as jombo boom as before but I'm happy and very content.

Ofcourse one can never go wrong with a well stocked pornoography video gallery...that is if seasickness dont get to you first. Variety is the spice of life so it is always welcome to exchange galleries with 'like minds'.Otherwise undergoin mind numbing activites like staring over the blue horizon might be your lot..
