Nice thread, i have been an offshore personnel on and off since 2008, av been on the AKPO FPSO AND USAN FPSO all located in the gulf of Guinea which is regarded as deep offshore. When you work offshore trasversing the sea makes you give God more glory, vast sea, different aquatic creatures. Life onboard can be very regimented, you wake up early make sure u have ur breakfast early most cases before 6am for hookup periods, if u miss d breakfast then u can be recompensed with tea break by 9am. Its a challenging enviroment and you must play by the rules or get booted out. When you eat during meals there are no bosses, be u an engineer, a welder a doctor or the OIM, you must queue for ur meals and when u are done u must thrash d remnants urself. Drills (muster drills, fire drills or pirate drills) can be interesting and very annoying if its late lest say 2am. I do 4/4 weeks and it has helped me slow down on booze, its always fun when u call the family and hear ur kids asking daddy when are u coming back? there is harmony onboard most cases. But the disparity in pay hurts so much, caterers take home pay in some instances are a day's pay for others yet they work their asses off. We eagerly look out for timeoff date with joy but God bless u if chopper doesnt come due to one reason or the other. I sign out by saying 90% of offshore workers are flirts

32million means that plus tax I am doing about 40. Also, my low 32 has to do with age and not yrs. Age is not on my side. I am 32. I have a colleague on my level who is 46 and on my same level earning 47mil. Also wages grow in "triangles". As you grow, your salary growth stalls. It has nothing to do with Technician or Engineering. Eg. my overall boss who is like the Installation manager earns about 70Mil and he has not had a salary increment for 3yrs because he has maxed out and only gets 5% annual productivity bonus and asset optimization bonus which is undefined depending on how much cost he saves. He is 30yrs in service, now Senior management and looking to retire in 2yrs. So salary is defined by a combination of all kinds of things that HR experts put together. Your first 10yrs, your salary will grow faster but then remember that the company wants to make sure they control how much pension they will have to pay you after retirement, especially considering that Nigeria staff get automatic 11% increase every year due to Nigeria inflation, plus the company is paying a percentage of your salary into your RSA. So there is a conscious effort to manage how much pension you will be due as at the time of retirement which makes also affects your salary growth.

discussions like this drive me crazy. Am a 100level student in ATBU.Bauchi. Mechanical and productions engineering.

@ Top man. you are a motivation. This discussion makes me want to do anything to get that 1st class. Mehn!

What I meant is that I am presently on an FPSO.
upengineer: Yes, i work on one of the FPSOs you listed. You are really vast with FPSO names. As regards babes visiting, well on my FPSO, babes cant visit. Reason been the remoteness of the location and the distance. My location is deep water, Gulf of Guinea. Maybe other locations or BARGES but on a FPSO, i think no. But i stand to be corrected. Drills are normal, no special thing about it. It can happen anytime. Entry Qualification depends on the job you are coming in for and that is determined by the HR. There are different jobs for different people depending on where you belong. There is marine department, there we have 2nd officers, deck hands, riggers e.t.c to welders, to painters to galley hands. Though the galley (canteen) is handled by a third party company to Rope Access guys. Sure, there is job for everybody. Though, am in operations sha. I think i have answered some funny questions

I work offshore as an (STC) safety training coordinator. We try our possible best to make employees maintain a safe attitude during their stay offshore so they can go back to their families at the end of their hitch as safe as they came. The working environment in the oil and gas industry is a hazardous one, but we believe safety is everyone's business and that zero incidence is achievable if all the parties involved work as a team watching after each other.

top10nigeria: The good thing about nairaland is you’ll never know me so I can write everything and not worry about my identity.
I work offshore and my Wife works offshore(Sub-sea Engineer). I work 2weeks tour while she works 4weeks tour.
The surest way of working offshore is to graduate first Class Engineering/Geo Sciences. My Wife had a first Class Chemical Engineering and Mine is Electronics. Production Oil companies won’t even invite you for Aptitude test if you do not have a 2-1 that is 4.0 and above. And now we have a lot of Nigerians with masters from UK, so its becoming harder for them to employ people with first degree. Now I am assuming you don’t have connections and your Parents are as broke as mine were when they were sending me to school. So that is one path to working offshore and I will call these people employed directly by the Oil companies as Level 1.
Another path is to be a Technical Non-Pro, eg. Cook, Secretary, medical, laundry, welder, painter, deck hands, etc… To make it easier, I will label this Level 2. Most of these people are on contract so they don’t get same level of compensation.
Eg. The average cook/laundry staff earns 840,000/yr
Average Technical Support eg. Pipe fitter/secretary/Welder etc will earn 4-8million a year
But the level 1 guys earn more.
Eg. Personally I earned a total remuneration of 32million last year and my wife Earned 23million last year. (I work for the majors while my Wife works for a Drilling Company – the majors(Exxonmobil / Total/ Shell / Chevron / Agip) always pay more than the drilling (Schlumberger / Transocean / Halliburton)
So the first thing I want those who want to work offshore to do is decide what type of job they want to do offshore. Do you want to be Level 1 or Level 2?
Personally, I have 15yrs of experience and I work in a production company so I am high paying. I don’t think there is anybody within my team including the 2year olds who earns a TR of less than 20million.
So I will encourage you guys to go back to your books and read them so hard.
For me the best part of working offshore is the 2weeks off. I will not transfer to the office for a 200% increase in wages and maybe its because I started working offshore when I was 18. Plus I work on measurement and control systems, so I don’t do any physical work like my folks in mechanical who have to work on pumps, so I am on the best job in the world right now. Also, the Time off allows me to spend time on my other endeavors and For me that is the best part of working offshore. Note: My Wife hates it, but because I am away half of the time, she is managing the job until she can go back to school for her masters.
I hope this adds a different perspective to the conversation.
Your wife wants to go for masters, do first class do master's lies from the pit of hell
