OP If you think Nigerians hate and dont appreciate doctors, what about police? Police are the ones who die everyday in this country.Doctors are the most admired and respected people in Nigeria after Rev Fathers/Pastors. On the other hand if you think NMA has a problem with all these people you mentioned, then NMA is the problem. A person cannot be right and still be in contention with the whole world.

MEDICAL DOCTORS STRIKE

How can medical doctors agree to go on strike and not just that, but with all their members in participation.

The solution to this is for the Federal Govt. and the Ministry of Education to draft a curriculum that enables all graduates on all Medical Science courses like Biochemistry, Anatomy, Microbiology, Biotechnology e.t.c. to go on and get their Doctorate in Medicine if they choose to as it is done in the US and Uk so that their would be enough medical doctors in the country
(they are called scientist physicians in the US, U can google it.).

Their is nothing special about nigerian medical doctors only that their are limited pklaces for people who choose to study medicine and only few with the means and connections corner it and not that those medical doctors are more imtelligent than people who graduate with first class and second class upper in these medical sciences.
[/quo
If you study any other medical related or biological sc. course in nigeria, u can still study medicine as a 2nd degree and u start from 2nd year. In my set we had graduate in anatomy, biochemistry, botnay, nursing sc etc. Also there is nothing like 1st class or 2nd class in medicine. U must pass all and if u got a distinction is added.

why cant the doctors go on strike to force the government to establish the NHIS SCHEME for all Nigerians . I am sure there will be sufficient funds to to manage the health care system if it becomes mandatory for all companies and individual to pay a token premium to for their health insurance scheme. This strike is a misplaced priority and at the expense of patients lives whom they have vowed to protect and save.
Doctors, I know you guys are trying and your remuneration is far below as compared to what is been paid in other countries but you guys should realized that all the stake holders in the health sector need one another and therefore is dispensable.

You think more of yourselves that you have deliberately kept blind eyes on the balance that other disciplines bring to medicine. You don't expect Britain or Switzerland to pay oil workers more since they don't even have that oil at commercial level. Isreal, USA, and Germany pay intelligence/defence personnel and nuclear reactor researchers more than doctors and oil workers. Nigeria pay oil workers more than doctors because oil constitutes over 95% of our GDP.

Considering the fact that major complicated health issues are referred abroad, I am of the opinion that doctors should earn as much as other health workers and nothing more. This is because the bulk of work they do can equally be managed with equal results by other medics and paramedics. This is not a means to ridicule doctors but to put in perspective the little health attention that Nigeria doctors can offer compared to other doctors overseas.

You are asking why doctors are hated. Just reading through the article posted would give some insight. I would pick a point or two.

It was stated in in that some wanted to study medicine but ended up studying pharmacy or nursing. That is very wrong. When jamb cuts you off due to marks in utme, you are either given botany, micro biology or zoology as a second choice and never pharmacy or nursing.

The latter are top course in their own rights. There was a year in OAU, I believe 2003 when the cut off mark for BSc Nursing was the highest for admissions and several times when the cut off for top courses in engineering are the highest.

In OAU, pharmacy is also known by everyone as the toughest course, they repeat years for failing a single course and in part 4, a score less than 60% in some of the courses offered is a fail.

Also, your greed is second to none. Despite the fact that police officers put their life on the line to protect you lots and other citizens, they never call for a strike action with their meager wage.

Before your colleagues tell me to go and pick a jamb form, I am an engineer and satisfied with my career. grin

I don't also hate doctors, I have a lot of them as Friends and family.

splasher: "DOCTORS" of MBBS, it seems this title of doctor has gotten into your heads and it's responsible for this unholy 24 point demand. You do not know drug use and drug interaction like the pharmacist. You are threatened by the Lab Scientist because gone are the days you look at someone nose and eye and say they have malaria. With increasing demand for evidence based practice, you are finding out you need the medical labs more and more. The advent of in- vitro diagnostics by the medlabs is reducing your scope further. Is that why you are asking the government not to allow them practice their profession. Why won't you allow others expand a technique that is within their ambit of practice? Is it because they call you "DOCTOR"? Show me why you should be called DOCTOR. Is there any anywhere in your certificate that gives you the right to call yourselves doctors? If none, then why are against other who want to call themselves doctors? Who and what gives you that right?
Answer these questions and I would recant my previous comment. With all the misdiagnosis in our hospitals, you are asking for salary increment. I think is time we DYMISTIFY this TITLE called DOCTOR. Is time we allow those involved in drug management monitor their patient they prescribe the drug for. Those involved in evidence based diagnostics should be allowed to expand their capabilities. There is no sense in "DOCTORS" of MBBS in insisting they should determine salaries and extent of human capacity development of other health care profession because they are erroneously called DOCTORS.
No offence intended but U are definitely what is wrong with Nigeria.

AyodejiGB: This is a response to someone who said doctors stroll in at 10am without any apology to see patients in the clinic. There is such a lack of understanding about how a government hospital runs and the frustrating bureaucracy that the doctor doesn't want.
I am a doctor and proud to be one.
In any hospital that admits patients, there are two general classes of patients: in - patients and outpatients. The same set of doctors attend to both. They will do a ward round ( for inpatients between 7.30am and 10am). The interns (or house officers start earlier). The medical officers or registrar's round starts after say 7.30am. When they leave depends on the number of patients, other activities such as senior registrars round, consultant round, specialist clinics or a clinical meeting. They will send some people to the clinic if they r running late and sometimes the round is finished after you close the clinic.
There is a call period that starts usually at 4pm but u have to finish your unit activity before leaving and u hand over difficult patients to the people on call.
I have worked in teaching hospitals and general hospitals in different regions on Nigeria.
The most junior officers and the delegated supervisor(s) stay behind until things r sorted out.
Call time is arranged and decision making is rigid. U know the limit of ur authority and u defer to ur superiors.
A doctor leaves as soon as he is free because u r under obligation to attend to patients even if u r off duty.
Doctors make mistakes but there us an audit process in known to most outsiders (public praise, private criticism). I work in a teaching hospital now and I know all doctors want to see patients promptly but we r hampered by the system.
We will soon ship wreck if we apply stupid changes without wholesome analysis of our health system and having an idea of our policy direction that's why the Primary Health Care is moribund like other areas.
The commonwealth or UK system that we base our health care system on has its challenges and the British make changes regularly. They have National Health Fund which caters for funding, social infrastructure is available.
The USA has a different system based on health insurance which has its challenges.(ObamaCare)
We cannot take selected portions of different systems (consultant status) and graft it into ours and not expect problems.
Please Google medical consultant with respect to the commonwealth, consultant nurse, consultant pharmacist. Wikipedia is helpful.

lies..@ all doctors want to see patients regularly.

Lots of doctors(esp pathologists) stroll in around 10:30 am to the chagrin of many patients in pains.

Simply put, some folks aint wise that‘s why all these backbiting, strive and disrespect is flying all over the health sector.

Keshi is taking home 7 million (if not upgraded to 10m) and the NMA/JOHESU are dragging each other back even when the earth is too large enought to contain them.

Until they are wise enough to come together as one body with same salary normenclature. They wont gain much ground.

Imagine what both NMA & JOHESU can achieve when they only threaten the govt on strike on a joint request.

A word is enough for the wise. A three fold cord cant be easily broken.

PerfectFortune: The OP may claim not to be bias in his judgment but in my opinion, he is very bias.

To begin with, I don't think ppl hate Drs cos it's a title anyway but the attitude of the holder of the title. For your information, majority of the ppl don't like Nurses either part of the reason which has been stressed out already by the OP but they seldom disturb us Strike actions and selfish demands.

I am not saying there are no competent health care providers in the country, it won't be fear on them but the majority of them are incompetent.

I can safely say 70 percent of the so called Drs are incompetent but they want to be treated as gods.

Majority of the Drs working at various govt owned hospitals also work elsewhere either at their own private hospitals or get a job with a private hospital all to the deteriment of the poor masses who frequent the govt owned hospitals.

In most govt owned hospitals, you hardly find a Dr that practise the true essence of the profession but those that are arrogant, selfish and complete cheats.

Take the FMC ebute metta for instance, patients rush to the hospital as early as 5.30/6am to pick nos so they can attended to and return home early enf as it is not like anybody likes going to the hospital anyway but the Drs stroll in around 9.30/10am with no apology the long waiting anxious patients (since they beliv they shld be worshipd) and by 1pm they stop consultation till the next day leaving for their various private hospitals.

If I should start talking about their level of incompetence, the whole page will not contain it as there are even on several occassions where they are corrected by Nurses (on medication prescriptns).

In simple terms, ppl don't hate Drs but the attitude of the holder of the title. They are arrogant, selfish, incompetent, cheats and the big bang, "Killers" going on strike to divert patients to their private hospitals.

I will keep saying it, herbalists are better than most Nigerian Drs..

Be sure to visit a herbalist next time u need medical attention Dear... let us know how it goes grin

You know Nigerians have suffered, their psyche battered that they seem not to even understand whatsup anymore. They are so used to crumbles thanks to unemployment, large families which promotes perenial poverty etc etc. They claim doctors are most paid, guess some of them would faint if they hear what engineers in oil coys and some individuals in corporate world even in this country earn monthly. Mtcheeew. How many of these docs can afford brand new cars without loans, send their kids to top schools and still float? Yet, in spite of all these, they are most vilified, disdained and ridiculed by the same people who need their services. I now see things differently

VantagePoint:
Basic healthcare, like deliveries, should be free, I agree and some state governments are already taking steps towards thid.
However, standard healthcare is expensive (drugs, fluids, bed space, needles, syringes, plaster, gauze, cotton wool, sutures, antiseptics, and so on ). The average Nigerian patient DOESN'T pay AFTER services are rendered and these disposables are used on him to get better. Mind you, these things are not free but bought with money. They start pleading or refusing outright to pay.
Who runs at a loss?
At public hospitals where healthcare is free, patients get prompt attention.
To buttress your point about Nigerian mentality of not wanting to pay for services, an article few days back was about a man who engaged the services of a prostitute for longer than necessary. They agrees at an amount and he bluntly refused paying the poor gal after satisfying his sexual urge. Of course, it led to a brawl requiring police intervention. That may be seen by some as 'smartness' but to me it is wickedness and selfishness. That ha semblance to what obtains in out private and even govt hospitals.

By saying the truth? I know Nigerians do not like the truth. MBBS holders are not doctors by qualification. Their certificate bearers testimony to that fact. MD is not the same as MBBS, you take more years to qualify and you write a thesis . If you are a medical doctor in Nigeria, bring out your certificate and read it, you will see you are erroneously called doctors. YOU are indeed the problem wrong with Nigeria for trying to hoodwink its citizens. However people like us try to put things in its right perspective. Shame on all you self named doctors. Why struggle with doctors in the hospital all your life when you can open your own community pharmacy, do drug imports or work in a pharm. company/industry? If the doctors don't want you guys there, simply walk out of the cage. You have better opportunities outside the hospital.

Nurses dispense drugs these days in hospitals, pharmacists are manning the chemist.

Enough of this professional bullying, or you guys are going to get it hot from me. 70% of your management is through drug administration and interaction, which you come a distant second to the pharmacist. Roliks09: I try hard to understand the bone of contention here, and its saddening that supposedly enlightened people are fighting over what is not. Lets just assume, that for one day, a pharmacist heads a teaching hospital. What could go wrong? These are the arguments I'd like to hear. What if a nurse was called a 'consultant nurse' based on her experience and years of service, or whatever other criterion that makes a medical doctor 'consultant', again, what would go wrong? The fight really just seems like a fight for supremacy and titles to me, but we all know really, that no one can perform the real roles of medical doctors. No one. So what are they fighting for? Both sides? But these doctors still go to work when there's an emmergency involving one of theirs. What are we talking about here? Its man's inhumanity to man that would ruin us all.

Let me educate you.
1. In 2010, an incident happened in one of the teaching hospitals. A consultant plastic surgeon was on the ward round to see one of his patients who underwent skin gratfting. This procedure usually involves the creation of a surgical wound (created by the doctor/consultant) on a part of the patient's body. Shockingly, the nurses in duty prevented the opening of the wound by the doctor citing the fact that it has been inspected by the "consultant nurse". In saner climes, the nurse would stand trial for trespassing and malpractice.

2. Another Nigerian tertiary hospital in 2014. A doctor had RIGHTLY prescribed a drug to a 2 year old child with seizure problems (carbamazepine, the drug, is avoided in pregnant women cause of the risk of having a malformed baby). However a "resident pharmacist" proudly refused to dispense the drug premising it on the reason I gave above. Right as he may seem to be, his half-baked idea of the workings precludes him from knowing that a 2yr-old is most likely not pregnant and is not herself at risk of having any malformations in an already formed and functioning neural and integuments.

In yet another hospital, a "consultant pharmacist" had discontinued a heart medication on which a patient is placed by his doctor. The "consultant pharmacist" cited the side effects of the drug as the reason, all of which is known to the attending physician as part of his holistic training. What the pharmacist fails to realize however, is that the side effects of some drugs can be the desirable effects to treat some conditions in certain instances.

Now I put it to you. With all the patients in this real life scenarios in danger of mortality (dying) by having their doctors' treatment modalities altered or discontinued by "your consultant nurses and pharmacist", would you rather yourself or one of your loved ones are those patients at those point in time? Be sincere in your answers and make the judgement yourself.

APContherun: To start with I dont think there's any law or statute that ties the word "Dr" exclusively to practitioners of medicine. The word is just a title ascribed to anyone who by virtue of an act or convention deserves it so it's wrong and silly of medical practitioners to claim exclusive right over it.

I need medical practitioners here to point me to any law that gives them exclusive use of the word "doctor" .
Why must everything be about arguments when google should be your friend? If you must know, there are places in the world where it is a crime to claim that title except you are a medical doctor, PhD irrespective. In Nigeria, you are free to call yourself anything since we are lawless. Night-soil-men can also be called Drs by Nigerian standard. Read comments here too and you will also learn from those who live outside the shores of Nigeria. Reading does not harm anyone abeg!
