THE MILITARISATION OF ELECTIONS: APC VICTIM OF ITS OWN MACHINATION by activatenigeria: 1:43pm On Aug 04, 2014
It is now obvious that the APC is playing a script and by their machinations have somehow succeeded in beguiling both the federal government and the security agencies as candid actors in the drama that has been set in the Southwest Nigeria as the stage.

First, they made bloodcurdling and threats statements that would startle the government and security agencies into deploying personnel to forestall any chance of the disenfranchisement of persons who may be afraid to leave the safety of their homes to cast their votes for fear of their safety.

Then after losing the election that was adjudged by every relevant observer to be credible, free and fair, the APC in an about-face would go on to alleged that the process was militarised by the Federal Government with the purpose of striking fear into the hearts of the electorate.

Yet, they somehow their machinations have come to haunt them and have thrown the party into deep confusion, that the party who apparently are the architects militarisation scheme, have now turned around claiming to be victims of its own undoing.

Reproduced below is a letter to the Department of Security Services issued from the Office of The Governor of Osun State, Governor Rauf Aregbesola and signed on the Governor’s behalf by Hon. Bisi Oyo Osun (P. A Political to the Governor) and dated 4th July, 2014, urging the government to deploy security personnel for the purpose of security and general protection in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Also, the APC has mandated all its elected members at state and national levels to converge on Osun from Tuesday and remain in the state until Saturday’s governorship election. This directive also covers all political appointees in states under the control of the APC, especially Special Advisers and Commissioners. [Punch - August 4th, 2014]

While it is within the purview of the rights of the party to do this, it is an irresponsible call which rubbishes the essence of governance. Does the APC expect that the people of these states will rule themselves until their leaders and every political appointee therein returns? Well, that’s story for another day. Albeit, the party leadership should not forget that these governors, senator, commissioners, special advisers and other political appointees each have a retinue of joint security details attached to each of them and the accumulation of these security details with the already deployed security agents in the state could result in a situation where the state of Osun would be overwhelmed with security personnel.

While this would ordinary not be a matter of concern to well-meaning and law abiding citizens, the APC should be reminded that its excuse of undue militarisation will not be sustained in the event that it loses the Osun election like it did in Ekiti state.

Moreover, the APC should be reminded that coercion and inducement are twin elements that are capable of vitiating freewill. The presence of these political appointees and cohorts may truncate the smooth sailing of the democratic transitional process if they are allowed to induce the electorates’ with monetary rewards. It should be recalled that Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State was intercepted by the Nigerian Army with wads of cash on his way to Ekiti prior to the Ekiti gubernatorial election, an allegation which the Governor has not yet debunked.

May God bless the author of this nice article. When things don't work according to their plans, they start crying wolf. Every nooks and cranies should be properly manned during and after the election cuz we all know how desperate they are, and we don't want an outbreak of induced political or ethnic violence.

Yours is a party that is so desperate that you always try to manipulate evidences to cover your dirty tracks. That said, I don't have time to trade word with an e-tout that lacks courtesy& manner of approach. By their fruits you shall know them.
