Russia has significantly built up its troop presence along the Ukrainian border, making it ready for a potential large-scale invasion of southeastern Ukraine if Russian President Vladimir Putin so chooses.

The New York Times' Michael Gordon and Eric Schmitt report, citing Western officials, that Russia has nearly doubled its battalions along the Ukrainian border in recent weeks. Seventeen more battalions and an additional 19,000 to 21,000 troops now compose a "battle-ready force of infantry, armor, artillery, and air defense within a few miles of the border." They could theoretically strike with "little to no warning."

Western officials also told The Times that Russia has upped its number of surface-to-air units to 14 from eight, and it has deployed more than 30 artilleries.

Western intelligence officials told the paper it was unclear what Putin was planning, but it is clear they are worried about what would be, for all intents and purposes, an invasion under the guise of a "peacekeeping" operation.

Phillip A. Karber, a former adviser to Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger, also thinks Russia's action may take a form of a “peacekeeping operation”. In a closed-door briefing for Congress last month, Mr. Karber noted that Russian military vehicles bearing the Russian emblem for peacekeeping forces had been positioned close to Ukraine.

Strikingly, the White House has been taking the idea of a Russian “peacekeeping” intervention seriously. “We’ve seen a significant rebuild up of Russian forces along the border, potentially positioning Russia for a so-called humanitarian or peacekeeping intervention in Ukraine,” Antony J. Blinken, the deputy national security adviser to Mr. Obama, said last week when the White House announced new sanctions. “So there’s urgency to arresting this.”

Russia and Ukraine had control over Crimea. But of recent, Ukraine is contemplating joining NATo forces (which is another name for USA). This wont be in the interest of Russia who does not want US presence in its region.

Another problem is that there are Russians living in Ukraine Are marginalized. This led to the conflict between the Russian speaking Ukraineans and the actual Ukraineans. So Russia as a country would want to defend its ethnic group.
But USA is not helping matters at all.

Those guys in the west dey fear PUTIN die, that's why they keep second guessing him. Black belt in martial arts is no mean feat!!!!
