Heck, during the struggle against colonialism, it was at the forefront of helping the African anti-colonialists hence most of the African academics back them were more or less Socialists and Marxists.
And without Soviet supporting Fidel Castro and Afro-Cubans in Angola, to defeat Apartheid South Africa, South Africa will most likely look like Palestine today.
