U.S. government researchers are working hard to get an experimental flu drug from Japan’s Fujifilm Holdings Corp. quickly approved to treat Ebola, as the death toll rises in West Africa.

Fujifilm’s U.S. partner MediVector Inc. in Boston is in talks with the Food and Drug Administration to submit an application to use the drug in humans for Ebola, according to Department of Defense spokeswoman Amy Derrick-Frost. If successful, the treatment drug would be one of the first allowed by U.S. regulators to fight the disease in humans.

The Department of Defense has prioritized the completion of a study that tests the drug called favipiravir in Ebola-infected monkeys, Derrick-Frost said. The drug can be fast-tracked through the regulatory review process after the studies are complete, she said. Preliminary monkey data are expected in mid-September, she said.

The epic battle pitting Mother Nature's most terrifying plague - The Ebola virus, against mankind's most advanced scientific research organisations, will have one of two possible outcomes.

1. An "experimental" Ebola cure is fast-tracked into IMMEDIATE and WIDESPREAD use for treating African victims of the disease, before their numbers rise to levels of critical mass beyond which a GLOBAL pandemic of Biblical proportion may result. That cure may at first be approved ONLY as a treatment for TERMINAL patients whose immediate families have signed consent waiver forms to document their assumption of all inherent risk, and then subsequently prescribed as a first treatment option AFTER possible side-effects in human subjects have been sufficiently observed to deem acceptable.

2. Red tape, patent considerations, insurance coverage worries, or profit-margin imperatives, on the part of the handful of pharmaceutical companies who have announced tentative Ebola cures, prevents the timely release of an effective Ebola cure to Africa. A flat and unwavering refusal by Western pharmaceutical corporations, to release a cure for the deadly illness, could effectively seal the fate of the African continent, followed very shortly, thanks to air-travel, by Western Europe, even as governments scramble to place ALL of Africa under absolute quarantine, with no commercial flights permitted in our out for at least a couple of years while the contagion depopulates vast swathes of entire continents.

Obviously Option 1 would be the preferable choice for the human race, since Option 2 belongs in the realm of worst-case scenario nightmares, and would best be avoided AT ALL COSTS by any living species that aspires to evade mass extinction.

santakris: At least we have hope.

Yes sir, Santakris, that hope, to which we all clung in desperation, has now given birth to a miracle. The life-saving drug ZMAp, has now been approved for IMMEDIATE shipment to Liberia, and that will be followed by its export to ALL other countries in Africa that are currently imperiled by this grave threat. Today there is cause for some celebration, because sanity HAS prevailed, and help is on the way for Africa, at last.
