Confident children deal with situations better; come up with creative solutions; create happy lasting relationships; and do great things as adults. To raise a confident child

Praise

Praise his accomplishments and tell your child that he worked very hard to finish what he started. Let the praise be sincere. Don’t just praise the object, praise the creator as well. If your child completed a project for school, tell him that you are proud of the time he put into finishing it, rather than telling him how great the project looks.

Express love

Tell him you love him every day, and that your love for him will never change, even if he behaves badly sometimes. Your child needs to know that you love him unconditionally; a child does not always know this if he has done something wrong. When a child has disappointed his parents, he may feel bad about himself.

Trust him

Trust him to make his own decisions. Even at an early age, children need the space and independence to make decisions about certain things. Allow him to choose what he wants for breakfast, what he can wear to school, what chore he wants to do and many more. If you are not comfortable allowing your child to choose things by himself or if he is too young to make that decision, offer him two choices and allow him to pick which he would like.

Give support

Support your child in all that he does, even if you don’t agree with him. Your child may make decisions that he feels are right and you won’t always agree. Support him and understand why he wants certain things. Support also includes an open communication with your child. When your child knows you support him, even if you don’t agree with his decisions, he will feel more comfortable talking to you and this will help him form better relationships with other people.

Encourage

- Problem solving

Being able to solve problems and make decisions are tasks related to high self-confidence. Activities that help to increase these skills can therefore help to make the child feel better about himself. Discuss his problems with him. For example, if he is having difficulty with a friend, ask him what things he could do to solve the problem and encourage him to consider different solutions.

- Creativity

Creative activities are great ways to increase self-confidence. Encourage a child to find and pursue a creative outlet such as writing poetry or making art. These activities can be done with the help of an adult.

- Help for others

Helping others can boost self-confidence. Activities that allow a child to feel helpful show him that he has a lot to contribute to the world. Encourage him to volunteer for a local charity, help a friend or sibling with homework or assist in activities at school and home. Adults can encourage these activities and do them along with the child while offering verbal praise and validation.

Warning!

-Never say negative words to your child, no matter how angry you are. Avoid telling him that he is not good enough or that he is dumb or stupid. This will hurt his self esteem.

-Never force your child to feel good about himself by making him do something he isn’t comfortable doing. Forcing your child will create self-esteem issues and push him backwards.

Raising a confident child is not easy, but if you can take the time to nurture your child and support his independence, you will watch him turn from a dependent, shy child to one who is sure of himself and his actions.
