About 85 out of the nearly 100 youths who were abducted by suspected members of Boko Haram a week ago in villages around Baga in Kukawa LGA of Borno State have been rescued by the Chadian army, Sunday Trust gathered.
It would be recalled that 97 men and 23 girls were allegedly forced into motor boats and vehicles on Sunday, August 10, after they were abducted at Hadaija village and other fishing communities in Doron Baga, along the shores of the Lake Chad.
It is not yet clear which day the victims were rescued, but sources said they were kept on some islands for some days after their abduction before the abductors moved towards Chad. Attempts by the insurgents to abduct more youths along Doron Baga was reportedly repelled by Nigerian security forces.
A source at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Maiduguri said he was aware that some of the victims had been rescued. “From what we heard, about 85 of the victims have been rescued after they were crossed over to Chadian territory by their captors. Among them are 63 men and 22 ladies,” he said.
According to him, it was one of the abducted girls who speak Shuwa Arab that blew the whistle when she realized that some of the Chadian soldiers understood her language.
“From what we gathered, when the Chadian forces saw the unsuspecting insurgents with many youths being boarded into some vehicles after they were ferried in boats, they decided to interrogate those that appeared to be leading the team.
“One of the insurgents lied to the Chadian forces that their homes had been attacked in Nigeria and were fleeing to safety. That was when the young lady spoke in Shuwa Arab and told the security operatives what really happened.
“What we are still trying to find out is whether the rescued villagers have been handed over to Nigeria or not,” he said.
Another source said there was some resistance from the Boko Haram insurgents which led to exchange of gunfire and deaths.
Nigerian security forces are yet to comment on the abduction, though the story appeared on most Nigerian newspapers last Friday.
Doron Baga is a prominent village along the shores of the Lake Chad in northern part of Borno State. The area is dotted with dozens of fishing and farming communities that have been severally attacked by insurgents in the last five years.
Some families that made it to Maiduguri last Thursday said they left their homes for fear of more attacks. Falmata Musa, 30, said thousands of people have been displaced.
She was seen together with her mother and eight children at the Borno Express Terminus on Thursday after they escaped from Hadaija village in Doron Baga.
“I don’t know the whereabout of my husband and among these children that you are seeing, only three are mine…the rest are children of other missing family members.
“It is sad to inform you that out of the nearly 100 youths that were abducted, 47 are from my immediate and extended family. Our houses and source of livelihood have been destroyed,” she said.
Halima Alhaji Adam who also escaped to Maiduguri said her husband and six people from her immediate family have been killed.
Halima said she was heading to Gashua in Yobe State.
“I feel it is better to go and live with family members than staying in the camps here in Maiduguri because we lost everything we worked for,” she said.

Islam do not have any problem, the problem is the people who have the same mentality like yours. You need a big help spiritually becos u don't seem to have any reverence for anything spiritually Godly. Who are u to dare condemn the religion of God.

Allah boys do have a vary big problem,and one of such problems is not addmiting that they is a problem but stil goes on in their wanton killing spree.Explain the killings by ISIS in Iraq,Syria,iran etc Explain the killings by BH.....BH wil continue to kill you and distroy your economy not until you admit the truth and deal with it.
