1) Human skull (and bones): A woman was stopped at Munich Airport in 2008 when baggage control found a human skull and some bones in her luggage. The woman was travelling from Brazil to Italy and after checking a death certificate and the appropriate papers the traveller was able to proceed. The remains belonged to her brother who had died in Brazil 11 years ago. His last wish was to be buried in Italy.

2) Bieber's monkey: Perhaps the most famous seizure made by Munich Airport Customs was Justin Bieber’s pet monkey, Mally. It was taken in March last year and became official German property after the popstar failed to claim the animal. The capuchin monkey was taken to an animal refuge in the city.

3) More monkey: On the subject of monkeys, this maggot-infested monkey head was the second oddest find made by officials at Munich Airport in 2008 (after the human skull). The airmail from South Africa contained the rotting head and live maggots. "We could smell it, and that was not something for sensitive noses," a Customs said. "That's why we opened it in the first place."

4) Nazi birds: These sinister stuffed birds were seized by Customs in Düsseldorf in May this year. They include a falcon wearing an SS cap. Customs became suspicious after they found a monkey’s arm in a package. They then searched the home of the man who came to collect the monkey parcel.

A dog was used to sniff the cargo of the two trucks which led to the discovery of the 1,720 tins, some of which contained heroin. The two drivers from Turkey were arrested and sent to a Dutch court.

7) Turtles in soap boxes: This year at Munich Airport, Customs caught a woman coming from China smuggling two baby red-eared slider turtles in soap packages (not pictured) without the required permission. She is due to be given a fine, which, including the cost of care for the turtles in Germany, will amount to a few thousand euros.

9) Exotic suitacse: In May 2014 this image on a security scanner at Frankfurt Airport surprised security officials. It shows 90 exotic animals including 55 tortoises, 30 lizards, four vipers and an iguana which a man was trying to smuggle. The 44-year-old Mexican was arrested at the airport. The snakes were kept in two knotted pairs of women's tights, while the lizards were held in canvas bags and packed in boxes.

10) Well-hidden cash: Customs at the German-Luxembourg border are always on the lookout for people trying to smuggle cash into Germany from the tax haven. One man thought he’d give officials in Koblenz the slip in April this year by tapping €200,000 to his genitals, but the bulge gave things away.
