Warning To Nigeria, WHO wants Travel Restrictions lifted Do Not Do It! by Litmus: 12:12pm On Aug 29, 2014 |
They predict twenty thousand deaths to come because of Ebola; they predict that the virus is mutating - which is code for, we're creating new incurable strains for a Nation we've targeted because we haven't made enough money from producing and selling drugs - and yet, in their meeting in beloved Ghana, they want West Africa to lift flight bans because some nations are beginning to suffer economic hardship and there might be starvation soon. Are they in the west going to lift travel ban on afflicted African Nations? Even if they do, they have the resources to cope. All those African people who deride your Nation and sneer that you're no Giant of Africa now want to rely on your economy as economic hardship looms in West Africa and beyond. No one wishes hardship on anyone but Nigeria most safeguard Nigerian lives. After all what help are we going to be to Africa if this virus decimates and turns us into basket case? 4 Likes |

Ebola travel bans 'should be lifted' West African health ministers call for travel restrictions on countries affected by the Ebola outbreak to be lifted, following WHO advice. Ebola outbreak: West Africans back lifting travel bans The WHO says that travel bans are jeopardising efforts to beat the epidemic West African health ministers have called for travel restrictions imposed to combat Ebola to be lifted. The ministers followed advice from the World Health Organization (WHO) which said that the restrictions create food and supply shortages and harm efforts to contain the deadly virus. The WHO says the West Africa outbreak could infect more than 20,000 people. It has already killed more than 1,500 of the 3,000 people infected in four countries. The WHO said it was important that airlines resume "vital" flights across the region, because travel bans were threatening efforts to beat the epidemic. |

I agree with you Litmus, Nigeria should think for itself, this is not the time to lift travel restrictions. |

If you scratch beneath the surface for reasons for the advice a frighting scenario emerges. You could imagine that if the outbreak of Ebola in the worst afflicted nations is not contained but worsens, as experts abroad predict, then economic life will so degrade in those Nations that people will try to leave in great numbers to other Nations in order to survive not just spread of the disease but hunger. In such a situation there will not even be a pretense that the disease is being managed. Neighboring Nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Ghana will be faced with refuge crises. Since there's no telling who among these refugees has the disease -at least before it is too late - it is likely that Nations to whom the refugees flee will be overwhelmed. The nationals of Nations to whom the refugees flee may not be as diplomatic as the authorities, leading to unpredictable and dire consequences. So the request for nations to ease flight restrictions could be construed as a request for nations to share resources to deal with this epidemic or else we be invaded by "disease spreading refugees". So the stark choice is that we either face or risk slow contamination, if we lift flight restrictions, or faces or risk massive contamination by uncontrolled influx of refugees and rogue emigrants if we don't The thing is, and i feel ashamed for thinking this and apologize but....but unlike Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Ghana, we're really far from the dangerous borders of the heavily afflicted nations. We have international sponsored terrorists taking our lands, elections looming, we should look after ourselves first. We should continue to restrict flights, monitor travelers, and do our best with our borders. The international community should really be the ones doing more. They should send massive assistance to Liberia, Freetown country,Guinea and not continue to deal with this epidemic piecemeal as they've been doing until now - if as they believe the worst is yet to come. 1 Like |

And who is the international community? Show you have not travelled beyond the boundaries of W/Africa to know that nobody cares. To be a man and be counted as one you solve your own problems. Abi why did you seek independence from your colonial masters? Litmus: If you scratch beneath the surface for reasons for the advice a frighting scenario emerges. ibedun: And who is the international community? I'm Nigerian. We solve our own problems or suffer the consequences when we don't. It's the rest of Africa that often beg for international assistance and, as part of the international community, Nigeria often chips in too. Right now, in the case of those Nations heavily afflicted by this scourge, they should get (outside Africa) international assistance because they cant cope. Its the right thing to do. |
