Gani Fawehinmi Saw Boko Haram Coming —widow by drsolob2(m): 10:23am On Sep 02, 2014
LAGOS—AS activists gear up to mark the
five years anniversary of the demise of the
late foremost human rights activist and
Lagos Lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, his
widow, Ganiyat Fawehinmi, yesterday, said
his late husband, foresaw the current Boko
Harem insurgency confronting Nigeria
before he died.
The late activist died on September 5th,
2009.
Ganiyat, who spoke at a briefing ahead of
the annual three-day memorial programme
for the late activist, said “I remember that
before my husband died, he warned that if
we do not consider issues of insecurity in
the country, the country will soon begin to
experience bomb blast daily.
”Then people castigated him but today, we
are in it. I do not think there is no week we
did not hear cases of bomb blast. If they
had heeded my husband at that time, we
would not be experiencing insurgency at
the moment. This was one of the issues he
raised before his death. Look at the case of
the Chibok girls, who were yet to be rescued
and several bomb blasts that had occurred
in the country.”
Ganiyat blamed President Goodluck
Jonathan for the insurgency in the country,
saying “I praise the former president, Chief
Olusegun Obasanjo, if he was the one still
in power, Boko Haram insurgent would
have been a thing of the past. The president
responded too late on the abduction of the
Chibok girls.
When his in-law was kidnapped, the
president swung into action. And few days
after, his in-law was rescued. It means that
the president was not protecting the
interest of the country and its citizens. If he
cannot do it, he should resign from office
and allow another person rule this country.
We do not need a sleeping president.”
“Where is this country going? These were
some of the things that my late husband
fought for before his death. He wanted
everyone to be safe in this country; to enjoy
their fundamental human rights.
That was why Nigerians are running out of
the country because they realized that their
life is no longer safe. Wherever we are, we
must stand up for the right things. We
cannot continue like this. This is the future
of the country that is been destroyed. The
future Gani Fawehinmis are killed at their
tender age. It is sad.
