Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, the Alaafin of Oyo(Pictured above with companions), was recently photographed in one of the largest and most expensive shopping malls in the UK, the Westfield Mall in London.

The Alaafin travelled outside Nigeria to celebrate his 76th birthday, and he went shopping with his four wives.

Royal flamboyance

Several Nigerian royal fathers live flamboyant and extravagant lifestyles, which has over time, prompted queries of the source of their income and immense wealth.

Nigerian monarchs do not pay tax, despite receiving monthly payments from local governments, state governors and the federal government.
The exact figure being received by the royal fathers has never been officially disclosed in public, but there have been reports that it’s as much as ‘tens of millions.

In 2008, former military governor of Kaduna, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, revealed that the Emir of Kano was paid about N86 million per month from the 43 local governments in the state.

He said, “Kano State has 43 Local Government areas. Each, Local Government pays the Emir of Kano two million naira every month, gratis. The Emir of Kano has about N86 million a month. That money comes from the oil revenue of the Niger Delta.”

In recent time, the issue of taxation of royal fathers has come to the fore.

In 2012, the Olubara of Ibaraland, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Oba Jacob Omolade, said royal fathers and other influential Nigerians should be compelled to pay tax.

The 72-year-old monarch said this during his 20th year coronation anniversay. He revealed that he had spoken to fellow mornachs about it, but while some of them shared his point of view, majority of them opposed him.

Do you know how much more the kings that reign in the 16th 17th even 18th century live the so call flamboyant life?... I can tell you authoritatively that the kings of nowadays are no match of those in those days, Colonial rules makes all the benefits being enjoyed by the obas to depreciate. In those times, according to history a King in the status of Alaafin of OYO, control every economy of his empire, imagine how much more he's gonna be getting compare to nowadays that government has taken over of every resource in each state, you cant even acquire a land without an approval from government .Do you know that if not for the government of nowadays Alaafin will be the emperor not only in OYO State, part of Osun,Kwara,Benin,Republic of Benin, Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo,Ogun and part of Kogi state. Now imagine how much flamboyant life would he have be Living?

Seems this picture was snapped during their shopping. And I am not sure how much the emir receives from the government but no Oba in the SW receive up to a million naira/month from the government, not even 500k/month. Nigerian journalists are professionals in printing false information.

Their wealth usually comes from their own private businesses and royalties they get from farms in their domains. In large kingdoms like ijebu, Ife, egbado e.t.c Yearly collections from farms are usually in the millions. i.e proceeds from fruits, cocoa, rubber, palm oil, tubers, palm kernel e.t.c

Hogwash. Oyo ile became powerless after the fall of Oyo empire during Afonja's era circa early 1800.. in fact, they turned to refugees and had to relocate from their original site, Oyo ile (Niger state) to their present site in Oyo state. Some others seek refuge in ile-ife where they became known as modakeke today.

After that, Ibadan became power house of the yorubas. Ibadan grew into an impressive and sprawling urban center so much that by the end of 1829, Ibadan dominated the Yoruba region militarily, politically and economically. Ibadan also eventually fell to the ekiti parapo.

So what do you mean by government of nowadays.
