Liberia, which has seen the highest number of Ebola cases in the devastating outbreak that has left more than 2,000 dead, will likely see thousands more cases in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization said Monday.

On Tuesday, the Health Ministry in Rome announced it was investigating a 40-year-old woman who may be carrying the disease following a trip to Nigeria. If she tests positive, it would be the first known case of Ebola in Italy.

The WHO is estimating that it will take six to nine months to curtail the outbreak, the world’s worst. Liberia has had 1,089 deaths due to Ebola — more than half of the total reported across the continent. There are now more than 4,200 infected people across Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal, the latest figures show.

“The number of new cases is moving far faster than the capacity to manage them in Ebola-specific treatment centers,” the WHO said in a statement.
Ebola has now killed more than 2,000 people. The sign above reads, ‘Ebola is still in Guinea. Remain vigilant!’

There are 15 counties in Liberia and 14 have confirmed cases.
