Police, NSCDC Clash In Osun

By JOSHUA DADA — Sep 24, 2014 | Leave a comment

Attempt by officers and men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State command to arrest an employee of a private guard company at Osogbo, Osun State yesterday led to fracas between officers and men of the state command of Nigeria Police Force and those of NSCDC.

It was gathered that some men from the state command of the NSCDC, had wanted to effect the arrest of the guard inside the premises of a shopping complex located along Odi-Olowo road, Osogbo when a policeman, who was in mufti, said to have been invited by a worker inside the complex, prevented them from doing so.

Source revealed that following the inability of the policeman to produce his identity card upon request by officers of NSCDC, he was forcefully shoved aside to carry out the arrest but the policeman who was said to have left the scene reappeared few minutes later with some of his colleagues.

An inspector of the NSCDC, who led the team to effect the arrest, Jide Ajenifuja, was subsequently drilled by the police and whisked away in a van.

When contacted, the assistant police public relations officer of Osun Command of the NSCDC, Mr Zeid Afolabi, said a team had gone to the shopping complex to seal off an unregistered security company operating there, only to be prevented from arresting those found within the office of the company by a man, who claimed to be a policeman.

Afolabi said, when the NSCDC team demanded for his identity card, he could not produce it, saying, “Our men had to shove him aside to do their job.

“But few minutes after, the policeman mobilized to the scene and the officer that led NSCDC team, was beaten and taken away”.

“Till now, we have been making calls to the state headquarters of Nigeria Police to secure his release but we are having difficulty getting him freed”.

Although efforts to get police side on the matter proved futile, as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Folasade Odoro, could not be reached on her mobile lines, but a source close to the police headquarters, explained that the NSCDC men had attempted to arrest a private security guard attached to Osogbo Branch of Bank of Agriculture over his failure to produce the certificate with which his company operates.

The source added that a policeman, who was near the scene, had intervened, urging the men to direct their enquiries to the head office of the company rather than arrest a guard post out on duty.

“But the NSCDC men would not take kindly to the suggestions of the policeman and hit him with the butt of their guns, injuring his chin,” the source said.
