54 Pictures & 54 Nigerians Wishing You A Happy 54th Independence Day Celebration by Mamiya(m): 3:13pm On Oct 01, 2014 |
I undertook a photography project last year towards the 53rd Independence day celebration of Nigeria here. This year I undertook another street project to capture 54 Nigerians holding the traditional talking drum and the national flag as a sign of celebration. These photographs were taken in Lagos, Nigeria. Everyone that appeared in these photographs were new to me at the time of capturing their photographs. The responses I got this year were pretty interesting. I'd start from the fact that I couldn't get a flag to buy. I later got from an ice-cream vendor who sold a used flag to me for N100 (I really was expecting him to “dash” me). A lot of people were not willing to take pictures and I didn't blame them. The recent awareness of being kidnapped for money rituals or being arrested to Abuja later in future also played a part. Many people complained about the state of the country and felt there really was no reason to celebrate. A big thank you to everyone that took pictures and didn't mind the fact that they could disappear and turn to real cash in my pocket by the fetish-looking talking drum. I believe we all are living miracles everyday. To every Nigerian home and abroad I wish you a happy 54th independence day celebration.
